Connecticut Sun News Release
Uncasville, CT - The Connecticut Sun announced their third consecutive year of participation in Nike's Game Growers initiative. Game Growers, a mission to increase participation in women's sports, was created after Nike noticed that teen girls are twice as likely to quit sports than their male counterparts.
The initiative offers 7th and 8th grade girls a chance to come together and use their voices, ideas, and passions to empower and inspire other girls to stay in sports. This opportunity will allow those selected to have a 1:1 connection with the Connecticut Sun, attend an online leadership camp, receive at-home kits that will help participants develop and test their ideas, and have their final project showcased by Nike.
The Connecticut Sun is looking for girls to apply to be Game Growers. Applicants will have the chance to be mentored by WNBA Champion and Connecticut Sun Director of Franchise Development, Morgan Tuck. "Inspiring the next generation to be great and to own their potential is something that I care deeply about. Having the opportunity to be a mentor through Game Growers is something I am looking forward to, and I can't wait to get started," Tuck said. "Mentorship is a perfect way to give back and make a difference in the lives of young basketball players, and hopefully I can help them have the best experience possible."
In order to participate, 7th and 8th graders (13+ at time of application submission) must have an idea that could help grow interest and participation in sports for girls. Applicants must be available to attend monthly online workshops to build their leadership skills and develop their idea. Lastly, each child must have a parent or guardian's permission.
Applications will be reviewed on the following criteria: an innovative approach to a solution, creativity relative to existing resources, feasibility of implementation, potential for impact, and clarity. The application deadline is November 15, 2021 at 11:59 PM PDT. and winning Game Growers will be notified by December 31, 2021.
