Phoenix, AZ - Tonight, the Connecticut Sun lost to the Phoenix Mercury, 90-84.
The Sun was led in scoring by Rebecca Allen who tallied 24 points, two rebounds, two steals and three blocks. Alyssa Thomas had another near triple-double performance with 20 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists and one block.
1Q - The Connecticut Sun got off to a slow start after the Mercury started the contest shooting 100% from the floor on 10/10 shooting in the first six minutes of play. DiJonai Carrington and Alyssa Thomas gave the Sun some life, accounting for all 14 of the Sun's first quarter points, with 3:25 left in the quarter. The Mercury maintained pressure to finish the quarter, ending on a buzzer-beating bank three from Moriah Jefferson. Phoenix's 45-point first-quarter effort broke the WNBA record for most points in a quarter, ending with 94.1% field goal shooting.
2Q - The Sun surged back with a run of their own, outscoring the Mercury 24-7 in the second quarter to bring the score to 52-48 heading into the locker room. Connecticut's second-quarter defensive crackdown marks the lowest point total scored by an opponent in the second quarter this season (previous total was 11, two times). Alyssa Thomas led Sun players at the half with 14 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
3Q - The third quarter was a relatively slow quarter for the Sun, as the team only managed to score 12 points. The Mercury was able to increase their lead to 10, as the third quarter expired.
4Q - The Sun forced a back-and-forth battle in the fourth, methodically working their way back to a single-point deficit with 2:05 left in the game, 82-81. The Mercury were able to withstand the Sun's run, going on an 8-3 run to finish the game, 90-84. Rebecca Allen led the Sun's fourth quarter effort, tallying 11 points and a block in the final frame, while Tiffany Hayes contributed seven points of her own.
Phoenix was led by Brittney Griner who tallied a double-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and four blocks.
Connecticut shot 42.3% (30-71) while Phoenix shot 54.4% (31-57) from the floor in the game. The Sun led the Mercury in second chance points (13-0), fast break points (13-6), and bench points (24-21).
