Connecticut Sun News Release
Uncasville, CT - Today, the Connecticut Sun announced Fidelity Investments, Inc. as its Official Community Wealth Partner. The move comes as an attempt to combat financial illiteracy in the state of Connecticut, an issue very important to the Sun organization.
The year-long partnership, aimed at providing financial education and access to the next generation of women, will give both Fidelity and the Connecticut Sun multiple opportunities to educate young people about money and basic financial concepts like spending, saving and investing.
Fidelity will host a learning session at one of the Sun's week-long summer basketball camps, giving its financial expertise to girls grades three through twelve. Campers will delve into financial education that highlights how to save, spend, and invest while also exploring new and different ways of thinking about money. Campers and their parents/guardians will also be introduced to the Fidelity Youth Account, where they'll receive a $50 deposit when they open a Youth Account for their teen, which will help teens leverage the skills they learn in the workshops.
"Working with the Connecticut Sun helps us continue to invest in the next generation of young women in New England-and of course it's exciting to support a women-centered organization like the WNBA," says Pamela Everhart, Head of Community Relations and Regional Public Affairs at Fidelity Investments. "Using sports as a way to break through, we are taking steps to help close the gender investing gap by engaging with young women early and often, providing financial education, and access to products to help them learn by doing so they can meet their financial goals."
In conjunction with the financial education that Fidelity will provide during the summer camp sessions, Fidelity will sponsor scholarships for girls to attend the Connecticut Sun's basketball camps. Fidelity will also be collaborating with players from the Sun throughout the year to provide ongoing virtual financial education to youth athletes through webinars and social media content.
"Our vision for supporting the Sun community includes bringing financial literacy to our players, fans and neighborhoods in-need. We found an amazing partner in Fidelity Investments to provide wealth management and investment expertise using a community wealth-building mindset. Fidelity has a record of helping investors of all ages, as well as creating a lasting positive social impact; and we are so grateful for their commitment to helping us make a positive impact in our community." - Jen Rizzotti, Connecticut Sun President
