Connect Four: Marauders Hang on for Fourth Straight Win
July 7, 2022 - Florida State League (FSL)
Bradenton Marauders News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. - The Marauders overcame a three-run deficit Thursday night to grab their fourth straight win with an 8-6 victory of the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Publix Field.
Grant Koch led the Marauders (7-5, 36-41) with four hits, a career-high, and two RBI, and four other Bradenton hitters enjoyed multi-hit nights in the 15-hit effort, which matched the team's season-high.
The score stood at 6-6 entering the top of the ninth inning. Rodolfo Nolasco lined a leadoff double off Williander Moreno and promptly scored the go-ahead run on a Wyatt Hendrie double to left field. Koch added an insurance run with an RBI-single, the final hit of his four-hit night for an 8-6 Marauders lead.
Lakeland (6-5, 38-39) staged a threat in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with none out against Wilkin Ramos on a single and two hit batsmen. But Carlos Campos entered in relief of his fellow right-hander and struck out Jose de la Cruz before getting Lazaro Benitez to ground into a game-ending double play.
Benitez had led the Flying Tigers' offense, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, and three RBI.
The Flying Tigers had built a commanding 5-2 lead after four innings, including jumping on Marauders starter Anthony Solometo for four runs on six hits, both career-highs for the left-hander, over two and one-third innings. Bradenton came within one run in both the second and third innings on a Koch RBI-single and a Nolasco solo homer, respectively, but the perseverant Lakeland hitters maintained the lead into the middle innings.
Right-hander Sergio Umana provided steady middle relief for the Marauders, holding the Flying Tigers to one run over three and two-thirds innings.
In the fifth, Hendrie delivered an RBI-single to bring Bradenton within two runs, and the Marauders erupted for three runs in the sixth off Lakeland reliever Carlos Marcano, getting a run-scoring grounder from Randy Romero and a go-ahead two-run double from Jase Bowen.
The resulting 6-5 Bradenton lead, however, would dissipate, as Jose de la Cruz slugged a game-tying solo homer off Cristian Charle in the bottom of the seventh. The game remained tied until the Marauders' resurgence in the ninth.
Five of the Marauders' 15 hits went for extra bases. Along with Koch's career-high four hits, Nolasco matched his season-high with three hits, while Bowen, Hendrie, and Norkis Marcos collected two hits each.
The series continues Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Publix Field. Both teams have yet to announce their starting pitchers.
