DUNEDIN, Fl - Fueled by a pair of home runs from Marcus Lee Sang and Arturo De Freitas, the Clearwater Threshers pushed by the Dunedin Blue Jays 6-4 to snap a five-game losing streak on Thursday night at TD Ballpark.
Left-hander Gabriel Cotto made his 13th start of the season on the mound for Clearwater, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and striking out four in five solid innings of work. The southpaw was credited with his second win of the season.
The Blue Jays (7-4, 35-42) opened the scoring in the second inning, using a two-run homer from Amell Brazoban to grab an early 2-0 lead.
Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Threshers (3-9, 38-39) responded with a big four-run frame. Second baseman Nick Maton, on an MLB Rehab assignment from the Philadelphia Phillies, singled home Clearwater's first run before Lee Sang launched a three-run homer to right-center field to make it 4-2 in favor of the visitors.
Fellow lefty Gabriel Yanez tossed two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out two keep the Threshers in front.
After Dunedin trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth, De Freitas launched his fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot out to right in the sixth to push Clearwater's lead to 6-3.
Right-hander Rodolfo Sanchez entered in the eighth for the Threshers, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out one in two innings of work. Sanchez secured his third save of the season, lifting the Threshers to their first win of the six-game series.
Clearwater and Dunedin meet again on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Lefty Jordi Martinez (2-4, 3.56 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Threshers, with coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network set to begin at 6:20 p.m.
