Condorstown Mayor Harvey Hall Issues Challenge With Stockton
April 15, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The mayor of Bakersfield, the honorable Harvey Hall, has placed a friendly wager on the Condors with Stockton Mayor Ann Johnston, in regards to the first-ever Kelly Cup Playoff showdown between Bakersfield and the Stockton Thunder. The best-of-seven series commences this weekend, with Games 1 and 2 taking place in Condorstown on Friday and Saturday.
Mayor Hall, who is dropping the ceremonial first puck on Friday for Game 1, is putting a gift basket from Dewar's on the line in supporting a Condors victory over their Central Valley rivals. Dewar's is a Bakersfield institution, celebrating its 100th year of making world famous candy and ice cream. In return, Mayor Johnston has placed a bushel of asparagus on the line for her Thunder. The Stockton area is a major grower of the produce product, and the wager ties in with the city's annual Stockton Asparagus Festival, which takes place next weekend while the Condors are in town for Games 3, 4 and 5.
"The Condors are a great community asset and a winning team," said Mr. Hall. "Go Condors! My staff and I love asparagus!"
"No one beats the Thunder," said Stockton Mayor Johnston. "They're a team on a mission and have our community's support, especially during the playoffs. We need something to chew on here!"
The Condors/Thunder rivalry has been built up for five seasons, and with both clubs ranking among attendance leaders each season, a large fan contingent is expected to travel back and forth between the two cities for each game.
