Comeback Falls Short Again as Sharks Drop 3rd Straight
August 4, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
For the third straight game, the Wilmington Sharks (30-20, 14-9) fell behind early, battled back, but couldn't complete a comeback as the Edenton Steamers (26-25, 14-9) capitalized on many walks to down the Sharks 8-6 on Thursday night.
This game began unlike the last two in that the Sharks had a big lead early on. They plated two in the first with RBIs from Alec Bohm (Wichita State) and Grant Koch (Arkansas), and added two more in the second with an RBI triple from Clark Scolamiero (South Carolina) who later scored on Mark Donadio's sacrifice fly. The Sharks wouldn't score again until the eighth inning, but meanwhile Edenton would start a rally of their own.
The Steamers would combine for seven runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings while only tallying two hits. Two runs in the third came off a home run, as did the two in the fifth. In the fourth, a the Sharks walked the bases loaded and the ensuing bases loaded walk scored one while another scored on a double play. The third run scored on a wild pitch, yet the Steamers did not register a hit in that fourth inning.
Edenton added one more in the eight, but the Sharks would strike for two in the bottom half. Donadio shot a rocket up the middle, but the pitcher knocked it down to get him at first while a run scored. Bohm hit a RBI double in the gap to make the score 8-6. They would go quietly in the ninth though, leaving only one on base.
The win went to Randy Dobnak (5-2). He threw five innings, with six hits, four runs, three walks and three strikeouts. Ethan Wortkoetter (3-3) took the loss, pitching three and two thirds innings, allowing five runs, on one hit, five walks and three strikeouts. Drew Faintich (2) got the save with one and one thirds innings with a hit, no runs and two strikeouts.
The Sharks will finish out the season on the road, traveling to Fayetteville on Friday night before heading to Holly Springs and Morehead City.
