Pilots Sweep DH; Earn Home-Field Advantage http://www.peninsulapilots.com/news/?article_id539 Aug 5th 2016, 02:10
HAMPTON, Va. - The Peninsula Pilots swept both games of their doubleheader matchup against Petersburg, winning with final scores of 13-1 and 7-1, respectively. With the sweep, the Pilots (36-16, 17-8) have officially clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs by having the best record in the league. The playoffs begin on Wednesday at War Memorial Stadium against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
In game one, multiple Pilots had big days at the plate, but Kyle Wrighte (William & Mary) and Charlie Cody (Virginia) shined the brightest. Wrighte went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, while Cody batted 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs.
A four-run second inning put the Pilots on the board first. Darian Carpenter (VCU) drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a groundout. Carpenter came around to score on Hunter Taylor's (South Carolina) RBI double to right-center. Nathan Eaton (VMI) followed with a single to put runners on the corners. After Eaton stole second, a walk to Chris Gau (Jacksonville) loaded the bases with one out. Wrighte continued his recent torrid streak at the dish with a two-run single through the left side. Kyle McPherson (James Madison) followed with a RBI single up the middle to put the Pilots ahead 4-0 after two frames.
The Generals got a run back in the third inning on a RBI single by Babe Thomas (Winthrop). Sammy Miller (Longwood) drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a single by Ryan Cox (Kutztown). The single from Thomas scored Miller to put the Generals on the board.
In the third inning, Cody hit a solo home run, his third of the season, down the left-field foul pole to put the Pilots ahead 5-1.
Peninsula exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning. Taylor and Eaton led off the inning with back-to-back singles before Gau hit a ball that was inches from a home run but settled for a two-run double. Josh Close (Liberty) pinch ran for Gau and came around to score on Wrighte's bloop RBI single. After a single by Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial) put two runners on, Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominon) drove in a run with a single to left. A walk by Carpenter loaded the bases with one out. A wild pitch allowed the Pilots to score in double digits for the fifth time in the past six games. A two-run single by Cody and an error put the Pilots ahead 13-1.
Sam Sinnen (Old Dominion) improved to 3-0 on the season after tossing five strong innings. The right-hander gave up a run while scattering four hits and striking six. Colt Harlow (James Madison) followed with two scoreless innings to close out the first game of the doubleheader.
Michael Kammerer (Kutztown) dropped to 0-4 on the season after yielding eight runs in five plus innings.
Cody had another great game in game two, and the combination of Walker and Devin Mahoney (Saint Louis) added more punch to the lineup. In this game, Cody went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run, and the Walker-Mahoney one-two punch batted a combined 4-for-4 with four runs and an RBI between them.
The Pilots picked up right where they left off in the second game of the doubleheader. In the first inning, Nick Walker (Old Dominion) led off with a walk and advanced to third base on a single from Devin Mahoney (Saint Louis). Walker then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Sinnen.
The home team put up four more runs in the third inning. Walker singled to lead off the inning and two consecutive walks from Mahoney and Sinnen loaded the bases. Cody, continuing his big day at the plate, roped a bases-clearing double down the left field line in the next at-bat. Eaton singled Cody over to third base, and Eaton would create a diversion by stealing second base, allowing Cody to come home on the throw. This made the score 5-0, and the Pilots' offense was not done yet.
The Pilots again touched the scoreboard in the fourth inning. After walking, Walker advanced to third base on two wild pitches. Mahoney plated Walker in the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly to right field, making the score 6-0.
Petersburg responded with a run in the fifth inning. Jake Rolly (Belmont Abbey) walked, then advanced to third base on a Pilots fielding error. Rolly crossed home on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat from Miller. This would be the only run the Generals could muster in the inning.
Peninsula regained their six-run lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring their seventh and final run of the game. Close got on base with a one-out walk, then rounded all the way to third base on two consecutive stolen bases. Wrighte batted in Close on a groundout to second base.
The Generals tacked on another run in the seventh but could not get any closer as the Pilots won their eighth straight contest.
Colin Nowak (Southern Indiana) earned the win in the nightcap, throwing four scoreless innings while striking out two to improve to 3-1 for the season.
The Pilots host Edenton on Friday night for Fan Appreciation Night in their regular season home finale at War Memorial Stadium.
