Comeback 'clones Walk Off With A Win

BROOKLYN,NY - August 10, 2016 - It was all Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy at MCU Park on Wednesday evening as the team celebrated Nickelodeon 90s Night with a walk off win against the Lake Monsters. Gene Cone, who went 3-for-5 on the night, had a perfectly placed squeeze to give Brooklyn a 5-4 win.

Merandy Gonzalez made the start for Brooklyn and after an uneventful first inning, quickly ran into trouble in the second. The righthander needed 35 pitches to get through the frame, allowing the game's first run on an RBI single to Robert Bennie, but departed the game after just 2.0 innings having thrown 45 pitches, 28 of which were balls.

The Cyclones struggles with control continued in third when Adam Atkins entered from the bullpen. The reliever needed a whopping 38 pitches to get through one inning in which he allowed a pair of walks and a pair of hits which resulted in a pair of runs as Vermont extended their lead to 3-0.

But in the bottom of the frame, the Cyclones started their comeback. Dan Rizzie, who came into the game hitless in his last 19 at-bats, got things started with a line drive double to left-centerfield and would later come around to score on an RBI double from Gene Cone. After a wild pitch moved Cone to third base, Nick Sergakis had an RBI groundout to trim the Vermont advantage to 3-2.

After trading zeroes in the fourth and fifth, Brooklyn would draw even in the bottom of the sixth. Desmond Lindsay got things started with a single and went first-to-third on a one-out single from Blake Tiberi. Lindsay would later score on a wild pitch to knot the score at 3-3.

But Vermont answered quickly, taking back the lead in the top of the seventh. Gabriel Feliz, Brooklyn's fifth pitcher of the night, surrendered an RBI single to Eric Marinez that gave the LakeMonsters a 4-3 heading to the seventh inning stretch. The see-saw scoring continued in the bottom half as Nick Sergakis had a perfectly placed bloop single to centerfield that plated the game-tying run and made it 4-4.

In top of the eighth, the Lake Monsters loaded the bags thanks to a walk and a pair of singles, but Taylor Henry was able to strike out a pair to end the frame and wiggle out of the jam and keep things even at 4-4.

After Joe Zanghi (1-0) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth, the Cyclones walked off with a win in the bottom of the frame. Dan Rizzie worked a one out walk and went first to third on a bloop single off the bat of Darryl Knight to put a pair aboard for Gene Cone. The former South Carolina standout took advantage of the scoring chance with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt with Rizzie sliding into home to give Brooklyn a 5-4 win.

With the victory Brooklyn improved to 26-24 on the season while Vermont dropped their 10th straight decision. The Cyclones will look to complete the three-game sweep tomorrow evening when they send RHP Justin Dunn (1-1) to the mound. The Cyclones will also be joined by Jose Reyes who begins a Major League Rehab Assignment with the club. It's a Jersday Thursday and the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a '86 inspired Cyclones jersey with an appearance from World Series Hero Jesse Orosco.
