BROOKLYN, NY --- Timely Cyclones hitting and Lake Monsters pitching wildness helped Brooklyn hand Vermont its 11th straight loss with a 7-4 New York-Penn League victory Thursday night at MCU Park.
Brooklyn had just two hits over the first 6 2/3 innings in a 2-2 tie, but Vermont reliever Ty Damron walked four batters in the seventh inning including a pair of two-out walks that forced home the go ahead run. Hengelbert Rojas followed with just the Cyclones third hit, a two-run single for a 5-2 lead. Brooklyn had a chance for another run as Gene Cone singled to left, but Robert Bennie gunned down Arnaldo Berrios at the plate to end inning.
Vermont cut the deficit to one in the eighth as they loaded the bases with no outs before settling for a pair of sacrifice flies from Steven Pallares and Eli White. But the Cyclones put together a two-out, two-run rally in the bottom of the inning with a hit batter, Blake Tiberi RBI double and Darryl Knight RBI single off of Branden Kelliher, who allowed another single as Brooklyn collected five hits in the final 1 1/3 innings.
The Cyclones had taken a 2-0 lead in the third on a leadoff walk, one-out bunt single a two-out hit batter, a bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly. Vermont starter Dakota Chalmers gave up just one hit with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings, but also walked seven batters and hit another in allowing the two runs. Four Vermont pitchers combined to hit three batters and issued 12 walks, the most by the Lake Monsters in a game since walking 14 on July 24, 2010 vs. Lowell.
The Lake Monsters scored a run in the fourth on a bases loaded Brett Sunde RBI groundout and tied the game 2-2 in the seventh on a White RBI groundout. Vermont then loaded the bases with two outs on a single, walk and hit batter, but Gabriel Feliz (1-0) came on to retire JaVon Shelby on a groundout to keep the game tied.
Tiberi was 2-fo-3 with two runs and two RBI for Brooklyn (28-25), while New York Mets third baseman Jose Reyes was 0-for-1 with 2 walks and a run scored in the leadoff spot in his first game with the Cyclones on a rehab assignment. Wednesday's winning pitcher Joseph Zenghi came on with the bases loaded and no outs to allow the two sacrifice flies before tossing a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.
Pallares was 1-for-2 with one walk, sac fly, run scored and three stolen bases for Vermont (19-34), while Bennie 2-for-4 with one run and White 1-for-3 with two RBI. The Lake Monsters have now lost 17 of their last 19 games overall (since 17-17 on July 22nd) and have also lost nine straight road games (three three-game sweeps at Tri-City, Lowell and Brooklyn).
