Comeback Bid Falls Short; Rox Lose 7-5

Little Falls, N.J. - After a rain delay, the Brockton Rox turned a 7-0 deficit into a 7-5 game with five runs in the sixth, but could not complete the comeback, dropping the decision to the New Jersey Jackals on Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Rox (4-6) drop to to 3-4 on their nine-game road trip after losing three of four to the Jackals (5-6) this weekend. Brockton also drops to 2-6 in games decided by two runs or less.

New Jersey built a 7-0 advantage before the rains came. The Jackals plated three in the first on an RBI double by 1B Jabe Bergeron and a two-run single by LF Jordan Newton. They doubled their tally in the third, powered by DH Jacob Butler's two-run home run and an RBI double by SS Mike DeJesus.

Before the top of the sixth could get underway, the game went into a rain delay for one hour and twenty minutes. When play resumed, Brockton would rally with five runs, all coming with two outs.

C Dan Coury, in his first game of the season, scorched a two-run double to left field to get the Rox on the board. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, RF Keith Brachold tripled to up his RBI total to 13 on the season.

After getting to within two runs, the Rox could not come any closer as three New Jersey relief pitchers combined for three scoreless innings. LHP Isaac Pavlik (1-1) earned the win for the Jackals, pitching five scoreless innings and allowing just four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. RHP Romas Hicks earned his fifth save in as many tries, and his third of the series, with a scoreless ninth inning.

Brockton starter LHP Logan Williamson (0-1) dropped the decision after allowing seven runs on nine hits in five innings of work. LHP Brad Hertzler made his first appearance of the season, going two scoreless frames and allowing two hits with two strikeouts. LHP Dustin Birosak pitched a scoreless eighth for the Rox.

Brachold was 2-for-5 for the day with three RBI and he finished the series with seven RBI total. 1B Melvin Falu added a two-hit game in the loss, while Coury was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a walk.

The Rox continue their nine-game road trip tomorrow night with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Sussex Skyhawks. RHP Wayne Lundgren (0-1, 8.00 ERA) will toe the rubber for Brockton against Sussex RHP Jusef Frias (1-0, 9.00). It will be a re-match of last Wednesday's game at Skylands Park. After the brief two-game series with the Skyhawks, the Rox will return home for a day off on Wednesday and then a home game with Worcester at 7:05 on Thursday.
