Columbus Cottonmouths News Release
Tory Allan grabbed two points to lead the Columbus Cottonmouths to a 5-2 victory over the Fayetteville FireAntz.
Columbus put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Fayetteville to score on any of its five power plays. The Cottonmouths could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 23 minutes in penalties during the game. Columbus put 36 shots on net during the contest, more than the 27.4 it averages per game.
Columbus also had goals scored by Preston Shupe, Sam Bowles, Andy Willigar, and Jordan Draper, who each put in one. More assists for Columbus came via Neilsson Arcibal, who had two.
The FireAntz racked up the penalties in the contest, and ended with four minors and three majors for 33 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game Fayetteville had been spending in the box. The FireAntz stifled the Cottonmouths' power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. By firing 37 shots on goal, Fayetteville exceeded the 25.1 shots it averages per game this year.
The FireAntz were helped by Nick Craven, who finished with one goal. Craven scored 12:34 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Fayetteville. Corey Tamblyn assisted on the tally. Brandon Richardson also scored for Fayetteville. Other players who recorded assists for Fayetteville were Kory Helowka and Matt Smyth, who contributed one a piece.
Andrew Loewen rejected 35 shots on goal for Columbus. The Cottonmouths registered zero goals on three power play opportunities. Fayetteville's Dustin Carlson stopped 31 shots out of the 35 that he faced.
