Columbus Destroyers game notes

May 18, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Columbus Destroyers News Release

QUICK FACTS:
Columbus Destroyers (5-9) vs.
Dallas Desperados (6-8)
Date: Saturday, May 22, 2004
Kickoff: 8:30 p.m. (ET)
Site: American Airlines Center (16,971)
Officials: Dennis Lipski (Referee), Rick Nelson (Umpire), Rusty Spindel (Head Linesman), Dale Newhouse (Line Judge), Rich Wilborn (Back Judge)
Radio: Columbus' flagship station WAZU-107.1 FM "The Big Wazoo" will broadcast the game live with Marty Bannister handling the play-by-play duties and Greg Frey supplying color commentary.
Series Record: The Destroyers and the Desperados have met only once prior to this week's engagement. That meeting came in week four of this season when the Desperados came to Columbus and handed the Destroyers their third loss in a row, 51-35.

Series Streaks: Dallas holds a one game advantage over the Destroyers but has no streak. This week's match will be only the second time these two teams have played one another.
Coaches: Destroyers, Earle Bruce (5-9 in 2004, 18-25 overall). Desperados, Will McClay (6-8 in 2004, 6-8 overall).

OVERVIEW: The Columbus Destroyers have come on strong since their bye week in week eight. Since the break they are 4-3, trying desperately to make up the ground they lost starting at 1-6, including last week's thrashing of the Grand Rapids Rampage, 59-28. Over the course of the season four players have stood out from the crowd, performing at the highest level, week in and weeks out. Rookie QB Ryan Vena has led the team onto the field for 12 of the team's 14 games. Aside from being the teams leading passer, he has set or tied the Destroyers' single season rush attempt and yardage records. WR/LB Cornelius White has established himself as one of the leagues biggest receiving threats breaking or closing in on all the receiving records. Return man Sedrick Robinson in also setting or tying every return record for the Destroyers. DS JoJo Polk holds the combined tackles record from last season but is closing in on the career record for the franchise. The Desperados find themselves now where the Destroyers were at the beginning of the season. After jumping out to a 5-1 record, Dallas has dropped seven of their last eight games, including the last five. This weekend's game is a match for pride with both teams all but out of the playoff race. The Destroyers are fighting their way back to respectability and Dallas is trying to salvage what respect they had.
THE SERIES: Columbus and Dallas have squared off only once. That encounter came earlier this season when the Desperados thwarted the Destroyers 51-35 at home. So, since the one assembly went to Dallas, the Desperados hold a one game edge over Columbus with no streaks for either team.

LAST WEEK: The Columbus Destroyers got the confidence boost they needed heading into the last two games of the season last week when they razed the Grand Rapids Rampage 59-28 in the last game to be played in Columbus this year. The 31-point margin was the largest margin of victory the Destroyers have had since their inception in 1999. QB Ryan Vena led the Destroyers offensively, leading the team in both passing and rushing. He passed 26 times, 16 of them found their mark for 225 and seven touchdowns. He also rushed five times for 32 yards and a touchdown. Those 32 yards put him over the top making him the single-season rushing yardage record holder for the franchise with 197 yards and climbing. His seven touchdowns through the air is also a career and season high for the rookie. WR/LB Cornelius White finally hit full stride after his ankle injury, coming down with six catches for 88 yards, taking three past the pylons, including one circus catch where he came up with the ball after it was bobbled by a pair of Rampage defenders. WR/DB Gunnard Twyner also played hard catching as many balls as White for 62 yards and the same number of touchdowns. OL/DL Jamarr Ward won Defensive player of the game for the Destroyers registering 2.5 tackles in his second game with the team, including a sack for five yards and a safety. The Destroyers made the most of their opening drive, scoring the game's first touchdown, taking a 6-0 lead. Columbus would soon make it 20-0 scoring consecutive touchdowns after kicking consecutive onside kicks. To finish out the half, the Destroyers went on to score two more touchdowns, a safety and a field goal which kicker Steve Videtich nailed as time expired in the half. Columbus and Grand Rapids went into the locker rooms with scoreboard reading 38-14, giving the Destroyers their biggest halftime lead of the season. The Third quarter saw little offensive action, Columbus only scoring one touchdown while holding the Rampage to zero, giving the Destroyers their second shut out quarter of the season. Both Teams traded touchdown in the fourth to close the game 59-28, the Boys who Destroy sitting atop the pile.

NEXT WEEK: Once the dust settles from the showdown in Dallas, the Destroyers continue their desert excursion northward to Las Vegas for a shootout with the Gladiators. The series is even between the two teams so the stakes will be high when the two teams go toe to toe on Sunday, May 30.

LAST SERIES MEETING: Columbus and Dallas last met on leap day (2/29) of this year. The Desperados were the better team that day, downing the Destroyers in their second home game by 16 points, 51-35.

THE COACHES:
Columbus – Earle Bruce, 4th season (1st with Destroyers) 18-25 overall
Earle Bruce returns to the Area Football League as head coach and general manager for the Columbus Destroyers. Bruce landed his first collegiate head-coaching job at the University of Tampa in 1972, where he fashioned a 10-2 record, including a win in the Tangerine Bowl. He took over at Iowa State University from 1973-1978, where he guided the Cyclones to eight wins in each of his last three seasons. Bruce succeeded long-time coach Woody Hayes at Ohio State in 1979 and went on to compile an 81-26-1 record from 1979-1987 in Columbus. He led the Buckeyes to two outright Big Ten titles (1979, 1984) and two co-championships (1981, 1986) and was named the 1980 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Following his tenure in Columbus, Bruce coached at the University of Northern Iowa in 1988 before taking over the Colorado State University program from 1989-92. He led the Rams to their best season in school history, a 9-4 record that included a win in the Freedom Bowl. Bruce began his coaching career in the AFL during the 1993-1994 seasons with the Cleveland Thunderbolts. He spent the 1994-1995 seasons with the St. Louis Stampede, making theirs the best record of an expansion football team at 9 and 4 and taking them to the playoffs. In 2001 Bruce coached the Iowa Barnstormers in the AF2 League.

Dallas – Will McClay, 1st season (1st with Dallas) 6-8 in 2004; 6-8 overall
McClay took over as head coach only three days prior to the start of the season when former head coach Joe Avezzano resigned. McClay's team jumped out to a 5-1 start but has since fallen apart, losing seven of their last eight. He has served as the Defensive Coordinator for the Desperados for the past three seasons before taking the head position. He also currently works in the Dallas Cowboys' personnel department. Prior to his move to Texas he worked in player personnel and scouting for the Jacksonville Jaguars and XFL's Orlando Rage. He has served as Defensive coordinator for may teams, including Grand Rapids, Anaheim, Florida, Milwaukee and Detroit. He also played his Arena Football career with the Detroit Drive, leading them to four ArenaBowls and three titles.

SEDRICK THE ENTERTAINER
Sedrick Robinson has proven to be one of the most dangerous offense threats in the league this season, but two weeks ago versus the Georgia Force he put an exclamation point on the statement setting, tying or coming very close to numerous single game franchise records. He set the record for most kick return yards in a game at 238 yards, tied the record for kickoffs returned for touchdowns with two, tied the record for most points in a game with 30 (two receptions, two returns and one rush for touchdowns) and set season and personal highs with 353 all-purpose yards (which is good for ninth in league history). Entering this week's play, Robinson has 2,258 all-purpose yards, which is third in the AFL.

ALL-PURPOSE YARDAGE IN 2004
Player (team) Total
Will Pettis (DAL) 2,644
Steve Smith (GRA) 2,340
Sedrick Robinson (CLB) 2,258

54-POINT LINE
The Columbus Destroyers have not lost a game when they have scored 54 points or higher. Two of those have come with scores of 60 or more. The Destroyers have lost only twice if they score more that 46. Those losses came at the hands of the Carolina Cobras when they lost by one point on the last play of the game and two weeks ago when they lost by 21 points to the Georgia Force. Every game when they have scored fewer than 54 points, the Destroyers have come out on the bottom of the pile.

RYAN THE RECORD-SETTER
Ryan Vena set the franchise record for most rushing yards in a season, and he still has two games left. He has 197 yards on the ground, obliterating the old record of 146 yards. He has also tied the record for most rushing attempts in a season with 54. Vena needs only three more rushing scores to tie the single-season record and four to set it.

MOVIN' ON UP
In his rookie season with the Destroyers, Quarterback Ryan Vena has quickly ascended towards the top of the Destroyers' all-time rushing list for a single season as well as career. In only 12 games of action, Vena is currently second all-time in Destroyers history with 197 yards rushing and is fourth in franchise history with ten rushing touchdowns. Vena's 197 yards gained on the ground is a franchise best for a single season.

DESTROYERS ALL-TIME LEADING RUSHERS/Career
Player/Years Yards Touchdowns
David White/1999-2000 223 13
Ryan Vena/2004 197 10

LARGE MARGIN
Last week, in the pummeling the Destroyers handed the Grand Rapids Rampage, the Destroyers won by their largest margin of victory ever of 31 points. The previous record was 28 points, which they have done twice against Detroit in 2002, and against Carolina last season.

YELLOW FEVER
This week's match-up will feature the two most penalized teams in the league. The Destroyers are the second most penalized team with 859 yards on 134 penalties. Dallas, the only team to commit more faux pas than Columbus has penalized for 892 yards on 145 penalties.

BIG GUY CAN BALL
In only his second game with the Destroyers OL/DL Jamarr Ward was selected the Defensive Player of the Game following his performance last Friday versus Grand Rapids. The deciding factor was his second quarter sack on Rampage QB Anthony Buich for a safety. In two games with the Destroyers, Ward has six tackles (5 solo), one forced fumble, one pass deflection and two sacks for seven yards lost.

WHAT A RUSH
Last week the Destroyers as a team rushed for a season-high 67 yards led by quarterback Ryan Vena who had a personal-best 32 yards on the ground. Sedrick Robinson added 23 yards on four carries and Cornelius White chipped in 12 yards on two carries. Entering this week's play, the Destroyers have the sixth best rushing offense in the league, averaging 26.5 rushing yards per game.

THE TURNOVER TREND
Five. That is the number of games the Destroyers have won when they win the turnover battle. The Destroyers are 0-6 when they lose it. Every single one of their wins has come when the loose balls have rolled their way, further proving that the team that wins turnovers wins games.
