THE STAKES: A major lift in the race for the playoffs awaits the winner of this week's game between the Orlando Predators (8-6) and the New York Dragons (8-6). Both teams are currently locked in a four-way tie for the sixth position. As only eight teams qualify for this year's playoff, the results of Sunday's game will have significant implications for both teams.

The Predators are currently playing their best football of the season, having won five of their last six games, including back-to-back road wins over New Orleans and Austin. New York is coming off a tough five-point loss to Los Angeles and has won three of its last five.

Head Coach Jay Gruden sees a classic match-up between two teams that have taken similar paths this season. "We both got off to slow starts. We lost five of our first eight, but now have won five of six and the Dragons started 1-3 and have won seven of 10. We have different styles but we are both playing good football right now. It should be a very close and hard-fought game."

An Orlando win would be its third in a row and match the longest winning streak of the season for the Predators.

QUOTE/UNQUOTE
"We do not want to get into a situation where we need to win in Week 17 and then pray for help on a tie-breaker. Our mission is to win the last two games. As far as we are concerned, every week is a playoff game."

-- Predators FB/LB Rupert Grant
THE COACHES
PREDS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN
After spending the last two seasons as the Orlando's quarterback, JAY GRUDEN returned to the bench as the team's head coach in 2004. After a Hall of Fame career as a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Storm, Gruden began his coaching career in 1997 by serving as offensive assistant for the Nashville Kats. One season later, the Predators made him the youngest head coach in the AFL. Gruden would go on to lead the Predators to three consecutive appearances in the ArenaBowl and a pair of championships. After guiding the Predators to a fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs in 2001, Gruden shocked the AFL world by announcing his intentions to resign in order to return to the playing field after a five-year layoff. In two seasons as Predators quarterback, Gruden directed the Predators to back-to-back appearances in the semifinals, falling one game short of his goal each season. In 2003, he recorded a 10-0 record with 49 touchdown passes and two interceptions as a starting quarterback during the regular season. Off-season surgery, combined with the tragic loss of former Head Coach Fran Papasedero in a June 19, 2003 traffic accident, resulted in Gruden returning to the sideline. Gruden will take a 51-29 (.638) all-time coaching record into the Austin game. He is 43-27 in regular season games (.614) and 8-2 as a head coach in playoff games (.800).

ORLANDO PREDATORS
HEAD COACHING RECORDS
Coaches, Years Record Pct.
Jay Gruden, 1998-2001, 2004 51-29 .638
Fran Papasedero, 2002-03 22-13 .629
Perry Moss, 1991-97 67-31 .684

NEW YORK HEAD COACH TODD SHELL
Todd Shell became just the second head coach in New York Dragon franchise history when he took over for John Gregory after the team got off to an 0-4 start in 2003. Shell responded by rallying his team to eight wins in his final 12 regular season games to get the Dragons in the playoffs and earn AFL Coach of the Year honors. Prior head coaching experience in the AFL includes four seasons as head coach of the San Jose SaberCats. With San Jose, Shell became the first coach in AFL history to take an expansion team to a division title. Under Shell's direction, the SaberCats qualified for the post season three times. Shell will take an all-time AFL record of 46-39 into the game with the Orlando Predators.

FUN FACT: Todd Shell's first and last game of the 2003 season as coach of the New York Dragons came against the Orlando Predators. After New York started the season 0-4, veteran Head Coach John Gregory was dismissed and Shell took over. Shell's Dragons lost to the Predators 72-56 in his first game a head coach. Shell would then rally his team to eight win in his last 11 games and qualify for the playoffs, where they would meet the 12-4 Predators. Orlando jumped out to a huge 42-18 lead in that game, but would have to hold on for dear life as New York would pull within seven in the final seconds. The Predators needed to recover an on-sides to ensure the victory.

GRUDEN ADDS TO WIN TOTAL: With Orlando's 45-40 win over New Orleans two weeks ago, Jay Gruden became just the ninth coach in Arena Football League history to win 50 career games. Now in his fifth season, Gruden has averaged more than 10 victories per season and has guided the Predators to four playoff appearances, three trips to the ArenaBowl and pair of championships (1998 and 2000). Gruden picked up win number 51 last week against Austin. The all-time win list:

1. Tim Marcum 164*
2. Danny White 137*
3. Perry Moss 86
4. Mike Hohenssee 83*
5. Mike Trigg 78*
6. John Gregory 72
7. Mike Dailey 71*
8. Darren Arbet 64*
9. Jay Gruden 51*

SERIES HISTORY AND NOTES:
Orlando has won five in a row after losing four of the first six games of the series...the teams met twice last season, with Orlando winning the regular season match-up, 72-56, back on March 2, 2003 and capturing a 69-62 win in the AFL Quarterfinals on June 1...four of the 11 previous games have come in the playoffs, with the teams splitting those four games...the Dragons played as the Iowa Barnstormers from 1995 to 2000 before relocating to the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island and becoming the New York Dragons in time for the 2001 season...the Dragons have a storied past, including appearing in a pair of ArenaBowls with Kurt Warner at quarterback and playoff berths in seven of nine seasons...this is the first regular season game for the Dragons at the TD Waterhouse Centre, as their last regular season game in Orlando came as the Iowa Barnstormers in 1998...the Predators came within two plays of recording just the second shutout in Arena Football League history in 1998 when quarterback Charles Puleri scored on a fourth quarter touchdown run on a third down play...it was Iowa's only points in a 28-6 loss...of the four playoff games, three have come in the semifinals...Iowa won two of those to earn a trip to the ArenaBowl; while number eight seeded Orlando pulled off a stunning 48-40 road win in 1999 to earn its fifth trip to the championship game...four of the 11 games were decided by eight points or less...Orlando has averaged 66.7 points per game in their last four contests against the Dragons.

PREDATORS BANGED UP FOR NEW YORK GAME
Has any AFL team dealt with more injuries than the Orlando Predators this year? Consider the number of games missed by injury by starters and key reserves. To date, 12 players have missed 52 games as the chart below indicates:
Player Pos Games Missed (reason)
Travis McGriff Starter OS 8 (Hamstring/thumb)
Michael Brown S/R WR/DB 8 (Hamstring)
Justin Cleveland Starter OL/DL 7 (Thumb)
James Bowden Back WR/LB 7 (Hamstring)
Connell Maynor Back-up QB 6 (back/knee/wrist)
M. Moye-Moore Back-up FB/LB 3 (knee)

Bret Cooper Starter WR/DB 2 (Ribs/Knee)
Idris Price Back-up FB/LB 2 (ankle)
Sean Riley Back-up OS 2 (ankle)
Lin-J Shell Back-up WR/LB 2 (shoulder)
And it doesn't look a whole lot better for the Predators this week as the injury reports shows:

Player Pos Injury Status
Connell Maynor QB Left Wrist, Knee Doubtful
James Bowden WR/LB Groin Doubtful
Marlon Moore FB/LB Knee Out
Jermaine Smith OL/DL Foot/hamstring Doubtful
Sean Riley WR/DB Knee Out
Lin-J Shell WR/DB Shoulder Out
Cecil Caldwell OL/DL Concussion Questionable

McENTYRE IS TRUE IRONMAN
Kenny "The Glove" McEntyre has been one of the toughest competitors to ever wear a Predators uniform. Despite numerous injuries in his career, McEntyre has yet to miss a start since coming to the Predators in the tail end of the 1998 season. Counting the game against Austin last week, McEntyre has now answered the bell for 102 consecutive games -- building on his own team record.

FLEMING KEEPS STRING ALIVE
With three receptions for 56 yards and one score against Austin, WR/LB Cory Fleming has now caught at least one touchdown pass in 23 consecutive games with the Predators. Fleming has also scored at least one touchdown in 29 of 31 career games with Orlando (streaks include playoff games).

PREDATORS GET DEFENSIVE, LEAD LEAGUE IN SCORING, TOTAL DEFENSE
If defense indeed wins championships, Orlando Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden has to feel good about his 2004 team – particularly its performance in the last six weeks. Through Week 15 of the regular season, the Predators led the league in scoring defense (42.8), passing defense (218.9) and total defense (238.7). Orlando has taken over the league-lead in all three categories since posting a 5-1 record over the last six games. The comparison between the first eight weeks and last six weeks of the regular season is remarkable as the chart below indicates:

1st 8 Games Last 6 Games
Points Allowed 390 209
Points/Game 48.75 34.8
Total Defense 2046 1244
Yards Per Game 255.8 207.0
Passing Defense 1859 1200
Yards Per Game 255.8 200.0

NEEDS
WR/LB Cory Fleming Needs:
--23 receptions to reach 700 for his career
--Needs 10 TD receptions to reach 200 for career
--Needs 154 receiving yards to set new Predators
Single season record (1,527 Barry
Wagner, 1997)

QB Joe Hamilton Needs:
--Needs two TD passes to reach 50 for season
--Needs 13 TD passes to establish Predators rookie
Record (Craig Whelihan, 60, 2001)

OL/DL Jermaine Smith Needs:
--Three QB sacks to set new Predators single
Season record (EJ Burt 9.5, 2003)

DS Kenny McEntyre Needs:
--11.5 Tackles to break Orlando's all-time career
Record (Barry Wagner, 398.5, 1992-99)

TAYLOR KEEPS PAT STRING ALIVE
Kicker Jay Taylor was a perfect 5 for 5 in extra points last week against Austin and has now booted 30 consecutive extra points. The Predators record is 34, set by Charlie Baumann over two seasons (1996-97). Counting field goals, Taylor has made 43 of his last 45 combined attempts. For the season, Taylor is 17 of 24 on field goal attempts (70.8%) and 71 of 77 on extra point attempts (92.2%). At his current pace, Taylor is on target to break two single season career marks for accuracy, as the Predators single season record for field goal percentage is 58.3% (David Cool, 1998) and the single season record for extra point percentage is 89.2 % (Charlie Baumann, 1996).

FLEMING EARNS IROMAN HONORS; CONTINUES ASSAULT ON WAGNER'S CAREER MARKS
By statistical numbers, WR/LB Cory Fleming did not have one of his best offensive days of the season against the Austin last Sunday, catching just three passes for 56 yards and just one touchdown. But by any other standard, Fleming played a huge role in Orlando's 43-26 and his efforts were noticed by the media, who voted him "US ARMY IRONMAN OF THE GAME."

Fleming's one-yard touchdown put the Predators ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. He also scored Orlando's last touchdown in the 4th quarter, splitting two defenders and hauling in a 28-yard touchdown run to make it 38-19.

Defensively, Fleming had three tackles, batted down a pass and thwarted a second half drive by recording his first sack of the season – stopping John Kaleo a few yards short on a fourth down play.

"It won't look like it on the stats sheet, but I think I played my best two games of the season during the past two weeks," Fleming said. "I felt like I was able to contribute on both sides of the ball."

HAMILTON USES FEET TO AID WIN
Although head coach Jay Gruden describes Joe Hamilton as a pure passer, the rookie from Georgia Tech used his feet to make several key plays in last week's win over Austin. Hamilton led the Predators in rushing with 35 yards, scoring two touchdowns on draw plays of one and five yards. He also busted off a 14-yard run, just missing a 25-yard touchdown when officials ruled his left foot ticked the out-of-bounds line on the Wrangler 11. With his performance, Hamilton upped his season rushing total to 141 yards and has tied Reggie Collier (1991) for the most rushing touchdowns by a Predators quarterback with 7. Hamilton would need 60 rushing yards in his final two regular season games to break Connell Maynor's club rushing record by a quarterback of 200 set in 2000.

MOST RUSHING YARDS PREDATORS QB
QB Year Rush Yds. TD
Connell Maynor 2000 200 6
Joe Hamilton 2002 141 7
Mike Hold 1993 97 3
Reggie Collier 1991 95 7
Chris Wallace 2001 50 0

DOGHEAD CLOSES IN ON JERRY ODOM'S MARK
With a quarterback sack last week against Austin, Rupert "Dogghead" Grant upped his official season total to 7.5. That total is just ½ sack off the club record by a "mack" linebacker set by Jerry Odom in the 1992 season. Here is the list of most sacks in Orlando Predators history:

Player Position Year Sacks
EJ Burt OL/DL 2003 9.5
Jerry Odom FB/LB 1992 8.0
Rupert Grant FB/LB 2004 7.5*
Jermaine Smith OL/DL 2004 7.0*
BJ Cohen OL/DL 2000 6.5
Victor Hall OL/DL 1994 6.0
Paul McGowan FB/LB 1994 6.0

* Two regular season games remain

Practice Schedule
Orlando will practice Wednesday through Saturday at Thunder Field, adjacent to the Citrus Bowl. Practices will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. through Friday, with Saturday's practice going from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. All practices are open to the media.

Common Opponents
As mentioned earlier, the Predators feel that this week's game is a must-win and even with a win, they fear one the league's tie-breakers (record against common opponents) would hurt them if they don't sweep both remaining games. That feeling is evident when one looks at what would happen should the Predators end up in a three way tie with Las Vegas and New York with identical but hypothetical 9-7 records. Because the three teams do not all play each other (Las Vegas played Orlando but not New York), the head-to-head tiebreaker would be eliminated. Against common opponents with New York, the Predators are currently 3-5; while New York is a much more healthy 6-3. Against Las Vegas, the Predators are 4-2 against common opponents with the Gladiators, compared to a 2-2 mark by Las Vegas against common opponents. So despite winning both teams (assuming a Predators win this week), Orlando would be behind New York because of common opponents.

Streaks Within Reach
A win Sunday against New York would ensure that the Predators finish the 2004 season with a winning overall record for an AFL record 13th consecutive season. The closest the Predators came to not finishing with a winning mark came during the 1999 season, when Orlando finished the regular season with a 7-7 mark, but won two post-season games and finished with a 9-8 winning record. Should Orlando qualify for the playoffs, it would also mark the 13th consecutive trip to the post-season, tying the all-time AFL record held by Tampa Bay (Storm can extend record to 14 if they qualify in 2004).

PLAYERS SPOTLIGHT
New York at Orlando

Dragons QB Aaron Garcia
One of the most accurate and prolific passers in Arena Football League history, Garcia is off to another record breaking season with 83 touchdown passes and more than 3300 passing yards and just 11 interceptions this season. For his career, Garcia has passed for more than 30,000 yards and 627 touchdown passes in just 115 career games. He is on pace to throw 90 or more touchdown passes for the fourth time in his career.

Predators OS Anthony Bright
Bright went to camp this season with the Predators but was released in the pre-season. He was re-signed last week when it was learned that Travis McGriff would be lost for an undetermined amount of time with a hand injury. With James Bowden (hamstring) and Sean Riley (ankle) also out, Bright needed to start and contribute in his first AFL game. He responded with five catches for 79 yards, including a 44-yard reception in the final seconds of the first half that set up a touchdown and helped set the tone for the second half of a 43-26 win over Austin.
