
Columbus Crew SC Edge New York, 1-0, in Leg 1 of Eastern Conference Semis

An early second-half goal created by Frederico Higuain led fifth-seeded Columbus Crew SC over top-seeded New York Red Bulls, 1-0, in Leg 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Sunday at MAPFRE Stadium. Down 1-0 on aggregate after Leg 1, the Red Bulls return to Red Bull Arena to host Columbus in Leg 2 on Sunday, November 11.
New York is 5-0-2 following a loss during the 2018 regular season. The Red Bulls are just one of two teams in MLS without back-to-back losses during league play with the other being Atlanta United FC.
New York's five-game winning streak was snapped following the loss.
Following a long ball by Milton Valenzuela, Higuain flicked his pass to Gyasi Zardes, who finished to the near post for the eventual game winner in the 61st minute.
Kaku and Andreas Ivan saw their first action in the MLS Cup Playoffs as Kaku earned the start and Ivan came in for Alex Muyl in the 70th minute.
Luis Robles tallied one save in his 19th career playoff match.
The Red Bulls held statistical advantages over Columbus in shots, 9-6, shots on target, 3-2, corners, 8-3.
New York and Columbus return to Red Bull Arena for Leg 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Sunday, November 11. Kickoff time and coverage of the Leg 2 matchup will be determined at a later date.
