Montreal, Que. - Spokane Chiefs prospect David Jiricek (CZE) was selected 6th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2022 NHL Draft on July 7.
Jiricek, selected 54th overall by the Chiefs in the 2020 CHL Import Draft, went into the NHL Draft ranked as one of the top two defensemen in the 2022 class and the fourth-rated European skater by NHL Central Scouting.
The 6-foot-3 defenseman played in Czech Extraliga, his country's top pro league, and had five goals and six assists in 29 games this season for HC Plzen. After suffering an injury in December at the World Junior Hockey Championships, Jiricek was able to play for the Czech national team at the 2022 IIHF World Championship, finishing with a goal and an assist in five games.
Jiricek made his debut in Czech Extraliga in 2019-20 at just 15 years old, posting seven points on a goal and six assists in 5 games with HC Plzen U17. That season, he added on 23 points (10G-13A) in 36 games played with HC Plzen U20.
