FIREFLIES SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH PELICANS: The Columbia Fireflies played in and split their third doubleheader of the season at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark Saturday evening. The pitching staff was dominant, only allowing a pair of runs across the two contests.

Game One: Columbia shelled the Pelicans in game one, taking the game 7-0 behind a dominant performance from Cruz Noriega and an offensive explosion from the line-up.Juan Carlos Negret led the charge, blasting his 16th and 17th homers in the fourth and seventh innings. It was the right fielders fourth multi-homer game of the young season and increased his League-Leading homer total. The homer in the fourth broke the scoreless tie and allowed the Fireflies to get the offensive ball moving. Later in the frame, Omar Hernandez doubled and the next batter, Felix Familia hit a two-out single to increase the Fireflies lead to 2-0.

Game Two: The Fireflies couldn't complete the sweep as the bats fell silent in a 2-0 loss to the Pelicans in the second game of the evening. Both pitching staffs flew through the first four innings, but it was the Pelicans who scratched the scoreboard first in the fifth. With two outs and Jordan Nwogu on second, Fabian Pertuz punched a ball through the hold between first and second to break the scoreless tie on the Pelicans third hit of the game.

GRIFFIN GIVES FIREFLIES FIRST REHAB APPEARANCE: Royals southpaw Foster Griffin was the 28th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. He spent parts of two season in Lexington in the now-disbanded South Atlantic League before climbing his way all the way up to Kansas City for one relief appearance in the 2020 season. Griffin has played three games against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans prior to now, all three of which were in the 2016 season. He obtained a 1-2 record in 12 innings where he maintained a 10.50 ERA against the Pelicans five years ago. The lefty offers a fastball, change up and curveball arsenal.

TOLBERT'S TUMULTUOUS JULY: The Fireflies utility player, Tyler Tolbert, struggled to start off the season, hitting .159 in 19 games in May and .170 in 17 games in June. It's safe to say that the Royals' prospect has turned the corner in July. The righty has hit .268 in 15 games in July, with four doubles and two homers. His two homers are the only two of his career and the four doubles match his May and June total. Tolbert has a .806 OPS this month, which trail only Maikel Garcia and Jake Mean's season marks (.828 and .814) while with the Fireflies. Both Garcia and Means are currently playing for Quad Cities.

TWIN STARTERS CRUSHING PELICANS: Yesterday's doubleheader starters, Emilio Marquez and Cruz Noriega have dominated Myrtle Beach Pelicans hitters this season, and they didn't disappoint with their performances. Heading into the game, they had a combined line of 16.1 innings pitcher, five hits allowed, zero earned runs and 21 strikeouts compared to two walks. They did that while holding opponents to a .102 average. Yesterday, the pair added 10 innings pitched, six hits and one earned run, compared to 10 strikeouts and only one walk.

MOVING ON UP: In correspondence with Foster being added to Columbia's roster for the game, reliever Nathan Webb has been promoted to Quad Cities. Webb leads the Fireflies with four saves this season and had a 3.38 ERA through 18 games, striking out 43 batters in 26.2 innings and holding opponents to a .154 average.
