The GreenJackets enter June in the middle of the pack of a polarizing South Division. As of June 2, Augusta's record sat at 24-23, which placed them 10 games behind the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and eight games back of the Charleston RiverDogs for third in the division. Columbia has matched up against Augusta nine times this season and has taken home three wins. Offensively, Brandol Mezquita has paced the team with a .318 average, but a pair of shortstops have stood out for the Atlanta Braves affiliate. Cal Conley leads the team with six homers. The switch hitter has also scored a team-most 34 runs this year and Caleb Durbin has driven in a team-most 28 RBI while swiping 17 bags this season. J.J. Niekro continues to push the envelope with a 2.39 ERA and prospect AJ Smith-Shawver has tallied 55 strikeouts on the campaign.

Meanwhile, Carolina is contending for a top spot in the North division. As of June 2, with a 26-21 record, the Mudcats sit only a half-game back of the Lynchburg Hillcats for the first-half division crown. This is the first time Columbia meets the Mudcats in franchise history. Offensively, Carolina is led by outfielder Arbert Cipion, who has a .292 average, has swiped nine bases and leads the team with 26 runs scored. Carolina's pitching staff has seen Michele Vassalotti factor into many games. The righty is 7-0 with three saves to pair with a 1.64 ERA in 22 innings this season.
