FIREFLIES LOSE WILD RIDE 11-9: The Fireflies couldn't take advantage of eight Charleston errors as they surrendered four runs in the top of the ninth inning in an 11-9 loss to the RiverDogs Tuesday night at Segra Park.Luis Barroso (BS, 3; L, 3-5) allowed five of the first six Charleston (18-12) hitters to reach safely in the ninth, as the RiverDogs would score four to charge ahead. The game-winning run came in when Bobby Seymour singled to plate Carson Williams with one out. The main culprit of Charleston's errors was catcher Ryan Piper, who committed five errors, four throwing errors and a catcher's interference. The eight RiverDogs errors resulted in four unearned runs scoring. On the flip side, the Fireflies (17-13) had a season-high eight stolen bases. Jean Ramirez, Omar Hernandez and Erick Peña all had a pair of stolen bases. Hernandez had a pair of hits to stretch his season-best hitting streak to eight games.

ONE-TWO PUNCH: In the last two games, Ben Kudrna and Frank Mozzicato have combined to spin 11 innings, while allowing just a single run. It's the first time the two have both claimed a win in one trip through the rotation.

HERNANDEZ HEATING UP: Backstop Omar Hernandez's bat has been heating up the last 14 games. During the run, which began July 4, Columbia's catcher has seen his batting average rise from .205 to .232 and he has had four of his six multi-hit games on the season. He has nine of the 17 RBI he has hit on the season in his last 13 games (he has played 60 games this season). The Fireflies backstop is also riding an eight-game hitting streak, which is his longest streak in the two seasons he has played in Columbia. During the run, he is 11-33 (.333) with one homer and seven RBI.

RALLY FIREFLIES: Columbia is outscoring opponents in only one inning this season, but it's an important one: the ninth. In the final frame of regulation, Columbia is outscoring opponents 34-27 this season. That really helps in late and close situations. Columbia is 14-11 in 25 one-run games throughout the 2022 season.

RUNNING WILD: Last night, the Fireflies swiped a season-most eight stolen bases. Prior to that game, Columbia had stolen as many as seven bags in a single contest. The effort was led by Erick Pena, Jean Ramirez and Omar Hernandez, all of whom had two stolen bases. If that weren't enough, Charleston's catcher Ryan Piper also advanced Columbia's base running cause with four throwing errors.

UPCOMING STRETCH: The Fireflies are in the midst of an important part of their schedule. The top four teams in the South Division are separated by only one game. The Fireflies are playing Charleston at home for the first time this season before visiting the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and then Kannapolis again. That's 18-consecutive games against the top four teams in the division to start the month of August. The Fireflies are currently half a game out of first place behind Kannapolis, 0.5 games in front of Myrtle Beach and are tied with Charleston. Columbia will also close out the season with a six-game set at Segra Park vs the Charleston RiverDogs. The Fireflies magic number to clinch the first playoff berth in franchise history is 36.

ROUGH SLEDDING: The Fireflies had a share of the lead through the entire game until the top of the ninth yesterday. Columbia led by as many as four runs before losing to drop from second to fourth in the South Division standings.
