Colts Win Second Straight in Edinburg, 4-2

EDINBURG, Texas - The San Angelo Colts took advantage of five errors and one big baserunning mistake by the Edinburg Coyotes on Tuesday night and won their second in a row over the Coyotes 4-2. The win in front of 2,987 fans at Edinburg Baseball Stadium puts the Colts back at .500 at 10-10.
With the score tied 1-1 in the second, the Coyotes thought they had taken the lead on a single by Nick Aranda that brought home Eric Gonzalez from second base. However, Gonzalez failed to touch third base, and he was called out on the appeal, nullifying the run and keeping it a tie game.
San Angelo seized the momentum in the top of the third and grabbed a 3-1 edge when Aaron Cone singled home two runs off Coyotes starter Eric Montoya (2-1). The Colts never trailed the rest of the way. Montoya lasted eight innings but took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
The Coyotes struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, off Colts starter Caleb Rodgers, who went four innings in a nice return outing, giving up just one run on six hits in his first start in a week-and-a-half. Angelo Fermin, who began the inning with a single, scored on a two-out single by Logan Wood to put Edinburg on top.
The Colts came right back with a run in the second to tie it, as Jason Crosland scored from third base on a wild pickoff throw to first base by Montoya.
Tyrone Pendergrass led off the seventh with a triple and scored on the next pitch when John Anderson laced a single to left-center to make it 4-1. The Coyotes got back to within two runs in the bottom of the inning when Aranda, who doubled to begin the frame, scored on a groundout by Gary Roche.
That was the only run allowed by Brandon Kling (1-0) in three innings of relief work as he picked up his first win as a Colt. He gave up just that one run on only two hits with two strikeouts, and was followed by Miliade Venas, who hurled a 1-2-3 eighth inning in his second appearance in as many nights since being traded from Edinburg to San Angelo. Closer Brian Daly faced the minimum in the ninth and recorded his fourth save.
The Colts conclude this three-game set in Edinburg with the series finale against the Coyotes at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday. After a series in Harlingen with the WhiteWings, the Colts then return to Foster Field on Sunday, June 8 to begin a nine-game homestand. The game that day, which begins at 5:05 p.m., will feature Weiner Dog Races, sponsored by Yuppie Puppy.
