Broncos Come Up Short in Loss to Harlingen

Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos dropped the middle game of the 3 game series 7-4 against the Harlingen White Wings on Tuesday Night at Veterans Field in front of a crowd of 860. The Broncos finish off their 6 game home stand on Wednesday night with the last game of a 3 game series against the Harlingen WhiteWings. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).

The Broncos would strike first in the bottom of the 1st inning. Dwayne White would hit a 1-1 pitch over the right centerfield wall for his 3rd home run of the season giving Laredo an early 1-0 lead.

The WhiteWings would tie the game in the top of the 2nd inning. Argelis Nunez led off the inning with a double. He would advance to 3rd base on a sacrifice bunt by Terry Roblez. Nunez would then score on a groundout by Amadeo Zazueto tying the game at 1.

Laredo would untie the game in thee bottom of the 5th inning. Anthony Bennett led off the inning with a single. Dwayne White would single as well, but Bennett would be thrown out at 3rd on the play leaving White on 1st with one out. Arnoldo Ponce would then double scoring White from 1st base and giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead.

That would lead would not last long. In the top of the 6th inning. Brian Nichols singled and went to 2nd on a walk by Ryan Fox. Argelis Nunez would follow with a 3 run home run his 2nd of the season. Then with one out Amadeo Zazueto would double but then get thrown out at 3rd base on a groundball by David Cardona. Miguel Peguero would then double sending Cardona to 3rd base. Andy Schon would be chased from the game after that play and relieved by Dan Sausville. Sausville would walk David Fowler to load the bases, but he would get Kevin Griffin to foul out and end the threat. But, the WhiteWings would now have a 4-2 lead.

Andy Schon would go 5 2/3 innings for the Broncos. He gave up 4 runs, on 8 hits, he walked 1 batter and struck out 4.

Harlingen would tack on a few more runs in the top of the 8th inning. Nathan Crawford came into the game to replace Dan Sausville and got the first two men he faced. Miguel Peguero would hit a groundball to 2nd baseman Matt Lawman who could not handle it and allowing Peguero to be safe at 1st. David Fowler would then single putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Both runners would advance on a wild pitch and then Kevin Griffin singled in Peguero and moved Fowler to 3rd. Brian Nichols would then single in Fowler to extend the lead 6-2. Both runs were unearned due to the error by Lawman.

That would be the day for Harlingen starter Alex Gett. Gett would go 7 innings giving up 2 runs on 8 hits. He would walk no batters and strike out 2.

The WhiteWings would tack on one more run in the top of the 9th. Justin Staat came in and hit Argelis Nunez and then walked Terry Roblez. Amadeo Zazueto would then single to load the bases for the WhiteWings. David Cardona hit into a fielder's choice forcing out Roblez at 3rd base but scoring Argelis Nunez and making the score 7-2 going into the bottom of the 9th.

Ivan Reyes would lead off the inning with a solo homerun his 4th of the season. Then with 2 outs Arnoldo Ponce would single and advance to 2nd on a wild pitch. Luany Sanchez would then single scoring Ponce from 2nd. That would be the day for Harlingen reliever Derek Bennett as Caleb Balbuena came into the game with a chance for the save. Balbuena would get Jose Salas to groundout making the final score WhiteWings 7 and the Broncos 4.

The Broncos had 4 runs on 12 hits and 2 errors, while the WhiteWings had 7 runs on 13 hits and 0 errors.

The Broncos record now stands at 11-9 . The Broncos will be back in action on Wednesday night at Veterans Field for the finale of a 3 game set against the Harlingen WhiteWings at 7:30.
