Robstown, Texas---The Colts took advantage of one mistake by Coastal Bend ace, J.J Trujillo (0-1), as Selwyn Langaigne smacked his first homer with San Angelo to lead his squad to a 3-0 victory. San Angelo took a 1-0 series lead in the best-of three playoff.
The pitching match up in game one pitted two of the top right-handed pitchers in the league. For the home team, the former big leaguer, Trujillo, boasted a 6-2 record with a 2.34 earned run average took the mound. Brian Henschel toed the slab for San Angelo. The Colts right-hander ended the regular season with a league leading 11 wins, and 121.2 innings pitched.
Pitching ruled in the contest as Henschel (1-0) dealt a complete game shutout in while Trujillo only surrendered three earned in nine frames.
The two hurlers traded outs through the first six innings of play. The Colts and Thunder each collected four hits, neither ball club had crossed home plate.
In the bottom of the eighth, the home team threatened to take the lead. Dustin Smith singled with one out and stole second. Amadeo Zazueta singled to left field, but
Ronnie Gaines gunned Smith at the plate to preserve the tie contest.
San Angelo struck in the ninth. Ronnie Gaines walked and Hunter Jobes singled. With two outs in the frame, Selwyn Langaigne belted a three-run shot to right to provide the only offense in the game.
The Colts and Thunder compete in game two of the best-of-three tomorrow night at Foster Field. San Angelo sends left-hander, Richard Salazar (5-1, 3.16 ERA with Shreveport-Bossier-AA) to the hill while southpaw, Frank James (4-6, 3.94 ERA), hopes to keep Coastal Bends playoff chances alive.
