Frichter named United League MVP

Published on September 1, 2009 under United League Baseball (ULB) News Release

San Angelo Colts infielder Bryan Frichter, who batted more than .400 most of the season, has been named the United League Baseball's Most Valuable Player for 2009.

The selection, by ULB field managers and league officials, was one of many made Tuesday (Sept. 1), including the naming of San Angelo Field Manager Doc Edwards as Manager of the Year and Amarillo's Trent Lockwood and Keenan Simon as Rookies of the Year.

Frichter, 24, is in his second year with the Colts. His latest batting statistics show him with a .387 batting average. He finished third in home runs with 12 and had 29 stolen bases. He began his ULB career with the Colts in 2008. He finished his first season with a .349 average.

The Chalmette, La., native was drafted by the Colts after playing baseball for Southeast Louisiana University, where he also excelled.

Edwards, who managed the Colts to the regular ULB season championship, when the playoffs are done, will have completed 62 years in professional baseball, as a player and coach. He has managed the Colts for three years.

Edwards played ball with a number of major league clubs, including the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees. He managed several teams, including the Indians.

Lockwood, 23, a 6-4, 235-pound infielder from Waco, and Simon, a 5-10, 170-pound outfielder from Allen, Okla., were greatly responsible for Amarillo's success. Both finished in the Top 10 in United League batting.

The San Angelo operation also was named Franchise of the Year and the San Angelo Standard-Times was named Best Newspaper Coverage of the Year, barely beating out the Amarillo Globe-News and the Laredo Morning Times.

Other honors include:

Executive of the Year - Edinburg General Manager Doug Leary. Leary is in his first year as GM for the Roadrunners, having previous management experience in Portland, Oregon.

Best Playing Surface - Coastal Bend Thunder (Fairgrounds Stadium, Robstown)

Best Team Public Relations/ Radio Announcer - Jonah Goldberg, Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings.

Best TV Coverage - None selected since it was determined all stations in and near the franchise cities had given excellent coverage.

The United League Baseball is completing its fourth year of independent professional baseball in Texas. Franchises are located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Laredo, Robstown (Coastal Bend), San Angelo and Harlingen (Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings).
