San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas - One night after suffering an embarrassing 20-12 loss, in which San Angelo collected 29 hits, the Coastal Bend Thunder exacted some revenge Saturday night with an 18-4 win at Foster Field to split a four-game series.
Despite the large offensive output, the Thunder were led by starting pitcher Carlos Rangel (3-0) who got the win by going seven strong innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits.
The Thunder dominated the game from the start as they scored the contest's first eight runs en route to the easy win. Catcher Manny Mejia led the Thunder offensively by going 2-2 with two homeruns, a SAC fly, five RBI and three runs scored. The two homers gave him four on the season, all of which occurred in the four-game set with San Angelo. The five RBI also gave Mejia 10 runs batted in for the series.
The Thunder also got a strong performance from centerfielder Dustin Smith who went 3-4 with two singles, a double, four RBI and a run scored. Leftfielder Alex Fernandez chipped in with his second homer, a solo shot, and two runs scored while going 2-5. The Thunder collected 20 hits for the game after recording 17 the night before and 57 for the series.
Leftfielder John Wagle and third baseman Michael Pettibone added a spark for the Colts by going a combined 4-8. Wagle went 2-4 with a single, triple, RBI, and run scored. Pettibone was also 2-4 with a bunt single and a solo homer, his third of the year.
Caleb Rodgers (1-1) took the loss for San Angelo after allowing nine runs in 3.1 innings of work.
In other news, the Colts have placed shortstop Butch Ballez and Rodgers on the inactive list. In their stead, San Angelo has signed shortstop Mark Ramos and second baseman Jerry Fisher. Ramos, a 6'0" 187-pound infielder from East Moline, IL, played in five games last season with Rio Grande. He attended Augustana College in Illinois where he was a teammate of current Colts player John Wagle. Ramos ended his career as Augustana's all-time leader in triples with 13.
Fisher, a 6'1" 195-pound infielder, is in his first professional season. He played collegiately at Texas Wesleyan where he was teammates with Ballez and current Colts relief pitcher Matt Chutchain. A Maypearl, TX native, Fisher had a .317 career batting average in three years at Texas Wesleyan with six homers and 89 RBI. Before that he played one year at UT-Arlington.
The Colts will now take to the road as they open a four-game series at Edinburg beginning tomorrow night. Game one's matchup will feature Ezequiel Astacio (1-1, 5.25 ERA) of the Colts versus Tim Haines (2-0, 3.38 ERA) for the Roadrunners. First pitch is at 6:05 on 1260 KKSA with the pregame show beginning at 5:50.
The Colts return home on June 10 to open a four-game set with the Amarillo Dillas. The night will be highlighted by the unveiling of the Colts' new scoreboard. It will also be Thirsty Thursday as fans can purchase $1 draft beer throughout the evening.
