
Colts Slip by in 4-3 Spirit Loss

(Barrie, ON) The Saginaw Spirit battled the Barrie Colts, the Eastern Conference's best, in a 4-3 loss in Barrie Saturday night. Saginaw's record moves to 27-16-0-2, good for 56 points and third place in the OHL West Division. The Spirit are one point behind the Sarnia Sting; the Plymouth Whalers are in first place with 65 points.
The Spirit opened scoring in the first period. Defenseman Nigel Williams (COL 06) scored at 12:33 in the first, assisted by Ryan O'Marra (NYI 05). Colts winger Hunter Tremblay evened the score early in the second period with a 5-on-3 power play goal at the 1:14 mark. Barrie broke the tie with a power play goal from winger Richard Clune at 17:21 in the second taking the score to 2-1.
Saginaw d-man Andrew Hotham quickly answered to tie the game early in the third period, scoring a 5-on-3 power play goal at the 3:33 mark. Winger Jan Mursak (DET 06) and center Cody Bass (OTT 05) assisted. Colts center Bryan Little gave Barrie a 3-2 lead with a goal at the 6:30 mark. Spirit center Ryan McDonough brought Saginaw back into the game with three minutes remaining, scoring a goal assisted by O'Marra and Bass. Barrie winger Kris Sparre stole the potential overtime and guaranteed point from the Spirit when he scored a goal with :31 seconds remaining in the game. The Spirit pulled netminder Ryan Daniels (OTT 06) to bring out an extra attacker but were unable to break through the Colts' defense. Barrie sweeps this seasons' two-game series with the Spirit; Barrie's Sparre also scored the game winning goal in the 4-2 Spirit loss on November 3rd, 2006.
Spirit goalie Ryan Daniels had 27 saves in the effort.

The Spirit resume their road game series tomorrow against the Owen Sound Attack then return home to face-off against the Oshawa Generals and phenom John Tavares on Friday January 26th at 7:11 PM.
