Colts Score Three in Ninth to Win

Harlingen, Texas --- First baseman Chris Caves's two-RBI double in the ninth inning broke a scoreless tie, and propelled the Colts to a 3-0 win against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Friday night at Harlingen Field.
With two on and only one out, Caves smacked a double into deep left-centerfield that brought scored right fielder Mike Mobbs and designated hitter Kyle Nichols. Mobbs led off the inning with a single, and Nichols drew a four-pitch walk.
Caves then scored from second when centerfielder Oscar Garcia hit an RBI single up the middle.
WhiteWings' starter Ray Hanson (0-1) gave up the leadoff single and walk, and therefore took the loss. He allowed two runs on five hits in eight-plus innings.
Colts' starter Alex Bates was fantastic in his pro debut. He had a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings. The lone hit Bates surrendered was a double by WhiteWings' first baseman Dan Pembroke. Bates pitched six innings, and took a no decision.
Reliever Corey Frerichs (1-0) pitched two shutout innings of relief to earn the win. Closer Alfredo Caballero then slammed the door on the WhiteWings in the ninth for his second save.
This series continues Saturday at 7:05 p.m. from Harlingen Field. Colts' lefty Demetrius Banks will face off against righthander Nate Johnson. The game can be heard live on 1260 KKSA beginning at 6:50 p.m.
San Angelo's home opener at Foster Field is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, at 7:05 p.m., when the Colts will host the Edinburg Roadrunners. It will be a $2 Tuesday, sponsored by Budweiser. All general admission tickets, longneck beers, hot dogs, and popcorn are just $2, courtesy of Budweiser.
