Colts Score Late to Collect Win

June 24, 2012 - North American League (NAmL)
San Angelo Colts News Release

San Angelo, Texas --- Starter Mark Willinsky gave up just one run in eight innings to lead the Colts to a 2-1 win against the Abilene Prairie Dogs Sunday evening at Foster Field.

Willinsky (3-1) worked around 12 hits to earn his third win of the season. The only blemish on his performance was a solo home run given up to Abilene first baseman during the second inning.

Tied at one in the seventh, right fielder J.J. Sherrill singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by Prairie Dogs' reliever Todd Weldon. Sherrill then scored on first baseman Daryl Jones's RBI single. Jones had scored the tying run on an RBI base hit by shortstop Landon Camp an inning earlier.

Weldon (0-3) surrendered the unearned run and took the loss.

Abilene starter and former Major Leaguer Billy Petrick allowed a run on six hits in as many innings of work. Despite a strong outing that included six strikeouts, Petrick settled for the no decision.

Colts' closer Erik Draxton worked around a two-out single in the ninth to collect his eighth save of the year.

The win improves the Colts to an even .500 at 15-15, while the loss drops Abilene to 13-17.

The series concludes Monday night at Walt Driggers Field in Abilene at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on KKSA, beginning at 6:50 p.m. The Colts' next home game is Wednesday, when they begin a four-game series against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. It will be the first Youth Clinic Night, sponsored by Wal-Mart, and a Sherwin Wednesday, sponsored by Sherwin Williams.

The Colts are a member of United League Baseball who are in their 13th season. Tickets are on sale now, and available at the Colts' front office at Foster Field.
