San Angelo Colts News Release

Amarillo, Texas---In a competition which did not feature much pitching, the Dillas (38-30) defeated the Colts (44-25) by a score of 8-7. Amarillo moved to within 5.5 games of San Angelo for the top spot in the United League Standings after a second straight victory against the first place team.

The Colts started the scoring in the first inning. With two outs, Rich Paz walked before Bryan Frichter sent a run-scoring triple to the right field corner; San Angelo was up 1-0.

Amarillo responded in the bottom half of the frame with a run of it's own; Stantrel Smith walked and stole second before Keanon Simon singled. Runners were situated at the corners, but Lester picked off Simon and Butch Ballez eventually gunned the lead base runner at third. Simon advanced to second on that play and later scored as Carlos Figueroa laced a single to right-center. The contest was knotted at one.

San Angelo reclaimed the lead in the top of the second; Jason Landreth and John Anderson started the frame with walks. After the next two batters were retired, Ronnie Gaines singled to load the bags and Hunter Jobes drew a bases-on-balls to draw the second Colts runner home. It was 2-1 road team.

More offense, though, was provided by the host squad. Willie James started the inning with a walk. Following a Smith walk, consecutive singles by Keanon Simon and Carlos Figueroa plated James and knotted the contest at two. Terrance McClain was hit by a pitch and Trent Lockwood delivered a sacrifice fly to center to give Amarillo it's first edge.

San Angelo would not trail for long. In the top of the fourth frame, Ronnie Gaines doubled to right-center. A walk to Hunter Jobes set the table for Rich Paz. The Colts second baseman doubled down the right field line, scoring Gaines, and leaving two runners in scoring position. Before Bryan Frichter had an opportunity to drive in a run, a passed ball brought in Jobes and Paz moved to third base. A Frichter single scored Paz and the Colts took their largest lead of the night; a two-run advantage. The edge increased following a double from Selwyn Langaigne which plated Frichter from first base. As the top half of the fourth inning concluded, San Angelo garnered a 6-3 lead.

The bottom of the fifth inning, however, was San Angelo's doom. It began with four consecutive Dilla hits. After one run had scored, a bases loaded walk to Trent Lockwood brought in the second run of the inning. A fielders choice off the bat of Angel Reyes added another. With that run, the Dillas knotted the game at six. The tie was erased after Andrew Wong drove in two more Dillas with a single to left field; a five-run fifth inning handed Amarillo an 8-6 lead.

San Angelo cut the deficit in half when Jason Landreth smacked his league leading 16th homer of the season over the left field wall. The blast cut the lead in half; but San Angelo was unable to finish the comeback.

In relief, Matt Smith (4-3) earned the victory in allowing one run in 3.1 innings. Doug Brandt (1-3) suffered the defeat as he surrendered five runs. Andy Noonan picked up his fourth save.

Tommorrow marks the second of a four game set between two of the United League's elite ballclubs. First pitch for San Angelo and Amarillo is set for 7:05 P.M.
