Fort Worth, Texas --- Base hits and walks guided the Fort Worth Cats to an 8-2 victory against the San Angelo Colts Friday night at LaGrave Field.
The Cats recorded nine singles and drew seven walks. Four of the base hits and three of the walks came in a five-run, bottom of the fifth inning.
San Angelo took a 1-0 lead at the very beginning of the game when first baseman Steve Rinaudo crushed a leadoff home run into left field. It was Rinaudo's team-best fifth homer of the year.
Fort Worth responded in the bottom of the first, however, scoring two runs and taking the lead for good. Left fielder Cameron Monger scored the tying run, and right fielder Chris Ellison scored the go-ahead run. Monger came home on an RBI single by shortstop Shelby Ford, and Ellison scored from third base when first baseman David Bergin grounded into a double play.
The Cats went ahead 3-1 in the second inning, and then pulled away in the fifth. Fort Worth sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs that inning. Monger, third baseman Greg Bachman, and second baseman Ryan Miller each had RBI singles. Miller's was a two-run base hit.
Colts' starter Corey Frerichs (4-3) didn't make it out of the fifth inning. He surrendered eight runs on seven hits and walked a season-high seven batters in 4 2/3 innings for the loss.
Meanwhile, Cats' starter Aaron Wilkerson held San Angelo scoreless through the rest of his outing. Wilkerson (5-1) gave up a run on seven hits and struck out a game-high eight batters in seven innings for the win.
San Angelo scored one more run in the eighth, but reliever Trevor Longfellow retired the Colts in order in the ninth to end the game.
