San Angelo Colts News Release

Harlingen, Texas---The San Angelo Colts (38-19) trailed by five runs entering the top of the eighth inning. A three run homer by Jason Landreth brought the Colts within two. However Whitewings closer Julio Santana struck out the side in the ninth inning preserving a game one victory for Rio Grande Valley (26-31) with a final score of 5-3.

The Wings struck in the third inning of a scoreless ballgame. Four Rio Grande Valley singles, a balk by starter Drew Coffey, and a throwing error by Jason Diaz gave the Wings a 3-0 lead.

The Whitewings offense continued to stretch the lead. Single runs in the fifth, and the sixth inning, tallied a five run lead by the home team.

It wasn't until the eighth inning San Angelo's offense pushed Wings starter Jesus Sanchez out of the ballgame. After pitching 7.2 innings of shutout ball, Sanchez left with runners on first and second base, handing the ball over to reliever Juan Diaz. The first pitch Diaz threw was deposited in the Rio Grande bullpen off the bat of Jason Landreth, it was a three run homerun that brought the Colts within two runs. The homer by Landreth was his fifteenth of the season, and 57th, 58th, and 59th RBI. The Colts designated hitter remains atop the league in those two categories. After eight innings of play, the score was 5-3 in favor of the Wings.

In the ninth, San Angelo brought the tying run to the plate after a leadoff walk was issued to Josh Collazo. Wings closer Julio Santana proceeded to strike out the side, ending game one of the series. It was Santana's fifteenth save of the year, best in the ULB.

Jesus Sanchez (4-1) nabbed the win pitching an impressive 7.2 innings, scattering four hits and allowing just two earned runs. Drew Coffey suffered the loss, working 4.1 innings, giving up eight hits and four earned runs. In relief, Jacob Ramos went 3.2 innings, allowing only a hit and no earned runs.

San Angelo and Rio Grande Valley will continue their four game series tomorrow at Harlingen Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The Kemps pre-game show will begin at 6:50 pm. Listen to all of your Colts action on KCLL COOL 100.1, or online at www.sanangelocolts.com.
