San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - Two of Santo Hernandez's three losses have come against the San Angelo Colts this season, but on Thursday night at Foster Field it looked like the Laredo Broncos' ace would get his first win of the season against the Colts (30-21). However, with two out and a runner on in the bottom of the eighth, Jose Torres provided the heroics for San Angelo in front of 2,066 fans, crushing a two-run homer to center field off reliever David Watkins (1-1) to put the Colts on top 8-7, and they went on to win by that score.

In the top of the ninth, Chris Weast earned his first professional save, getting some help from second baseman John Anderson who made a terrific sliding play up the middle to start a game-ending fielder's choice with the tying run at first.

Hernandez had a rocky start in the first inning but limited the Colts to just one run when San Angelo had the bases loaded with nobody out. The Broncos (28-28) tied the game in the second off Colts starter Frank James when Luany Sanchez hit his first of two solo home runs on the night. Sanchez now leads the league with 16 dingers. Laredo then took a 2-1 lead in the third on a two-out RBI single by Arnoldo Ponce, driving in Steven Wright, who doubled with two out.

The Colts fought back though and scored three runs off Hernandez in the third to make it 4-2. Aaron Cone, who hit three homers last night, drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single. Two batters latter, Wyn Diggs smoked a double to right field scoring Torres, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame.

San Angelo widened its lead to 6-2 with single ruins in the fifth and sixth innings on sacrifice flies by Bryan Frichter and Torres. The Colts blew the lead though, as Laredo scored five runs in the seventh, three off James and two unearned runs off Ryan Mulle (3-2). Sanchez hit his second homer of the night to begin the inning and two runs scored in the frame on sac flies. Another run scored on a throwing error by the third baseman Cone and Wright also drove in a run with an RBI double. At that point, Mulle was on the hook for the loss and Hernandez was in line for the win, as he went six innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks. But Torres' homer in the eighth turned Mulle into a winner, made Watkins the loser, and gave Hernandez a no-decision. James also received a no-decision, going six innings plus three batters into the seventh. The lefty surrendered five runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Tyrone Pendergrass, who was hit by a Santo Hernandez fastball on his left foot in the first, left the game in the fifth inning after two more at-bats. That led to Jason Crosland coming in to play left, Torres moving from left to right, and Frichter moving from right to play center for the first time in his pro career. Crosland was the batter on base for Torres' homer, drawing a two-out walk after he fell behind 0-2 in the count. On ball 3 of the at-bat, Anderson was thrown out trying to steal second for the second out of the inning.

The Colts conclude this three-game series with the Broncos at 7:05 p.m. CT on Friday July 10, with the gates opening at 6:05 p.m. CT. The first 1,000 fans coming to Foster Field will receive Colts baseball card team sets, sponsored by NY Special.
