Colts Break Losing Streak

August 26, 2009 - United League Baseball (ULB)
San Angelo Colts News Release

Edinburg, Texas---The San Angelo Colts (46-29) derailed their four game losing streak by defeating the Edinburg Roadrunners (43-32) 3-2. San Angelo is 2-5 on their current eight game road trip.

Ezequiel Astacio (9-1) was outstanding as he delivered eight innings and surrendered only one earned run. The tough luck loser was Eric Montoya (5-4) as Astacio's competitor tossed eight frames while giving up three on the night. Jameson Maj collected his fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Edinburg put a run on the scoreboard in the second. Hunter Owen singled, Robert Matlock grounded into a fielders' choice but advanced to third on a Butch Ballez overthrow. After sprinting to third on a ground ball to first, Matlock scored when Osiel Flores reached on a miscue by Bryan Frichter. It was a 1-0 lead for the home team.

San Angelo took the lead in the top of third inning. Hank Lanto singled and Ronnie Gaines reached on a fielders' choice and Lanto was safe on a bobble by second baseman, Sergio Guerrero. After Hunter Jobes chopped to third and the runners scooted over, Rich Paz came up with a two-run base knock. Paz ran to second on the throw. Bryan Frichter pushed Paz to third on a sharp grounder to first. With two outs, Selwyn Langaigne laced a double to left plating Paz; the road squad led by two.

The Roadrunners cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth. A Sergio Guerrero sacrifice fly to center field sent Osiel Flores to home plate cutting the Colts lead to 3-2. The road team, however, did not suffer a late-game collapse.

A victory by the frontrunners places San Angelo three games ahead of Edinburg in the ULB Standings. The win guarantees at least a split in the season series.

Tommorrow marks the final contest of a four game set between the Colts and Roadrunners. Game time is set for 7:05 P.M while the Kemps Ice Cream Pre-game show is slated for 6:50.
