Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids have signed forward Rémi Cabral to a one-year contract through the 2024 season with a club option for 2025, the club announced today. The club also announced Cabral has been loaned to Phoenix Rising FC of the USL Championship for the 2024 season, effective immediately. The Rapids have a right to recall Cabral at any time during 2024 season.
"Rémi has demonstrated his ability to score goals in various ways and perform well under pressure," said Colorado Rapids Sporting Director Fran Taylor. "For any player, receiving meaningful minutes in a competitive environment is crucial for development. Phoenix will provide Rémi with that opportunity, and we look forward to observing how he adapts and improves during his time there."
Cabral, 24, joins the first team after spending one season with Colorado's MLS NEXT Pro side. The Frenchman was a crucial piece of the Rapids 2 attack during the 2023 season, totaling 19 goals and one assist across 20 matches. In the team's final regular-season game against Minnesota United FC 2, Cabral scored a hat-trick, including the game-winning goal in the 89th minute of the match to earn Colorado a No. 1 overall seed in MLS NEXT Pro heading into the 2023 playoffs. The performance notably earned Cabral a share of the MLS NEXT Pro Golden Boot award and solidified his spot on the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro Best XI. Cabral's success during his 2023 season earned him a short-term call up to make his official MLS debut with the Rapids First Team in their match against Columbus Crew on May 31.
"We are pleased to see the progress that Rémi has made in his time with Rapids 2. He has proven himself as a difference maker in the final third. This move serves as another strong example of the importance of R2 and the pathway between the second and first team. We look forward to seeing him face the challenges that will come with playing in the USL Championship, hopefully setting him up for future success in MLS," said Brian Crookham, Rapids 2 General Manager.
Prior to joining the Rapids, Cabral spent the 2021 and 2022 season with former USL Championship side LA Galaxy II. During his time in Los Angeles, Cabral made 56 appearances across all competitions, recording eight goals and two assists.
Born in Paris, France, Cabral spent his youth career with Paris Saint-Germain's U-17 and U-19 sides before signing his first professional contract with FC Metz B in France's Ligue 1 in 2017, where he recorded three goals in 26 appearances. Following his time at FC Metz B, Cabral joined Valenciennes FC for two seasons, where he totaled two goals across seven appearances with the club's second team.
