
Colorado Rapids Sign Experienced Defender James Riley

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Friday, March 6, 2015) - Colorado Rapids announced today the signing of 32-year-old defender James Riley. Riley joined the club in Tucson halfway through preseason training prior to the start of the 2015 MLS regular season. Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Riley, a Colorado Springs native, is heading into his 11th full season in Major League Soccer after being drafted by the New England Revolution with the 21st overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft. During his career, the fullback has made a total of 235 league appearances for the Revolution, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC, Chivas USA, D.C. United and LA Galaxy.
"James is a great addition to the group both as a player and a team-mate," said Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni. "It is great to have someone of his experience in an important position for us."
Riley is a five-time Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champion and most recently won the 2014 MLS Cup with the LA Galaxy. The right-back has amassed for 19,415 minutes with two goals and 17 assists during his MLS career.
"We would like to welcome James to our club," added Paul Bravo, VP of Soccer Operations and Technical Director. "As a player who grew up playing youth soccer in Colorado, he will provide a unique opportunity to the group. In addition he adds an experienced presence to the team."
Riley has traveled to Philadelphia with the team as the Rapids are set to begin regular season play this Saturday against the Union at PPL Park at 2 p.m. MT. Coverage of the match begins at 1:30 p.m. MT on Altitude.
