
Colorado Rapids Loan Goalkeeper John Berner to Independence

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Independence today announced that the USL club has received goalkeeper John Berner on loan from its MLS affiliate the Colorado Rapids. The loan agreement covers the duration of the USL and MLS seasons.
"We feel this is a good time for John to get game sharpness following his offseason injury," said Rapids Senior Director of Soccer Development Brian Crookham. "John is a talented goalkeeper and we look forward to monitoring his progress during his time on loan."
Berner spent the 2015 season on loan with the Independence, logging 1395 minutes in 17 appearances, all starts. The 25-year-old posted a 6-5-6 record with a 1.48 goals against average, .657 save percentage and four shutouts. Berner was named USL Player of the Week in Week 7 following a 1-0 victory over Louisville City FC in which he made six saves. He also was named to the USL Team of the Week Bench the following week with a 3-0 victory over the Richmond Kickers.
A native of St. Louis, MO, Berner was selected 35th overall (second round) by the Rapids in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He appeared in five matches for the Rapids in 2014, finishing with a 1-1-3 record and earning two shutouts.
The Independence (1-2-0) host the Charleston Battery (2-0-1) at Ramblewood Stadium on Saturday, April 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm ET. Tickets are available at www.charlotteindependence.com/tickets or by calling 704-206-1515.
