Colorado Rapids' First Action of Preseason Will be in Las Vegas against the Quakes
January 14, 2015 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Colorado Rapids News Release
For the third year in a row, the Colorado Rapids will play in Las Vegas as part of their preseason preparations, with a match against MLS rivals San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, February 15, ko 7 p.m PT (TICKETS).
In previous visits the Rapids have met Chivas USA and played at Sam Boyd Stadium, home to UNLV's football team. This year, not only is it a different opponent, but the venue will be different also.
Cashman Field was originally built with soccer in mind back in 1983. The inaugural Las Vegas Pro Soccer Challenge Cup, though, marks the first time that the stadium will have played host to the sport, with it being used by the Las Vegas 51s Triple-A minor league baseball team, an affiliate of the New York Mets.
"We are excited to head back to Las Vegas this preseason as we get 2015 underway," said Rapids head coach Pablo Mastroeni. "Along with the weather, I feel it's a great opportunity to continue building chemistry as a group, and participate in our first preseason game against San Jose."
The Rapids played in Vegas in 2013 and 2014 in conjunction with the Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Showcase, but this will be a first such trip for the San Jose Earthquakes. The Rapids will be keen to register their first victory in Vegas, having previously lost to Chivas USA in both their meetings.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come out and support Major League Soccer in Downtown Las Vegas," said Nick Geber, president of Las Vegas Pro Soccer. "It will be a great night out and a chance to see two top MLS teams that have three MLS Cup titles between them as well as international soccer stars like Gabriel Torres, Matias Garcia and Chris Wondolowski."
