Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - Colorado Rapids have announced the acquisition of U.S. international midfielder Jermaine Jones from New England Revolution in exchange for general allocation money and the Rapids' first-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. Targeted allocation money has been used on Jones' contract and he will not occupy a Designated Player slot.
"Jermaine's record for club and country speaks for itself," said Paul Bravo, Technical Director and VP of Soccer Operations. "He has the ability, versatility, experience and leadership skills to improve our young side. We are excited to have him join us in Colorado."
Jones has made 58 appearances for the USMNT, scoring three goals and notching four assists. His most notable moment came in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil during the group game against Portugal. The United States were trailing 1-0 before Jones curled home a stunning equalizer from 25 yards. The 34-year-old featured in all of his country's games in the tournament before they were eliminated by Belgium in the Round of 16.
Born and raised in Germany to an American father and German mother, Jones represented Germany in various youth age groups and played in three friendlies at the senior level. However, he was allowed to switch national teams in 2009 as he held a U.S. passport and had not played in competitive games for Germany.
Jones made his debut for the USMNT against Poland in Chicago on October 9, 2010, assisting Jozy Altidore in the 2-2 draw. In addition to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, he has represented his country at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2011 and 2015.
He spent the first 14 seasons of his club career in Germany. He was with Eintracht Frankfurt between 2000 and 2004, then spent a further three years with Bayer Leverkusen. He would go on to have two highly-successful spells with Schalke 04 during which they reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on two occasions. He also spent time with Blackburn in the Premier League and Turkish side Besiktas.
Jones joined New England Revolution as a Designated Player via a blind draw on August 24, 2014 and would play a pivotal role as they reached the MLS Cup final that year. In total, he played in 33 regular and post-season games for New England, logging 2,397 minutes while scoring three goals and adding six assists.
The Rapids season starts on Sunday, March 6 at 1 p.m. MT on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes, with the Home Opener at Dick's Sporting Goods Park against the LA Galaxy on Saturday, March 12 at 5 p.m. MT.
