Colorado Rapids Acquire Danish International Defender Andreas Maxsø
January 27, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids announced today they have signed defender Andreas Maxsø from Denmark's Brøndby IF on a three-year deal with a club option for an additional year, pending completion of his medical and receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa. Maxsø will occupy a Designated Player slot on the Rapids' roster.
"Andreas is an experienced and physically imposing center back who has led his side to a championship in a strong European league," said Pádraig Smith, Colorado Rapids Executive VP & General Manager. "His proven leadership and commanding presence will be tremendous addition to our team as we tackle multiple competitions next season."
Maxsø, 28, arrives in Colorado after spending the past four seasons with Brøndby IF in the Danish Superliga where he captained the team to the 2020-21 league title. During his time with the Copenhagen-based side, Maxsø made 112 appearances across all competitions, including six starts in the 2021-22 UEFA Europa League, recording seven goals and two assists in that span.
A native of Hvidovre, Denmark, Maxsø began his professional career with Danish side FC Nordsjælland in 2012, spending six seasons with the club before stints in Turkey (Ankaraspor Kulübü, 2017-18) Switzerland (FC Zürich, 2018-19) and Germany (KFC Uerdingen 05, 2019). With Zürich, he started four of the club's Europa League Group Stage matches in 2018-19 as the Swiss side advanced to the knockout phase, while also starting in the first leg of their Round of 32 match against Napoli.
At the international stage, Maxsø has two caps with the Danish national team. He made his debut in a 2-0 friendly win against Sweden in November 2020 and was called up to four of Denmark's 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers before earning his second cap in a 3-0 friendly win against Serbia last March.
