Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids have selected Costa Rican international winger Luis Díaz off waivers, the club announced today.
"Luis is a dynamic winger who brings pace and power to our side," said Colorado Rapids Sporting Director Fran Taylor. "Those attributes, along with his MLS and national team experience, will be a welcome to addition to our group as we prepare for a congested stretch of seven games in 22 days."
Díaz, 24, joins the Rapids after spending the previous five seasons with Columbus Crew where he recorded six goals and 14 assists across 83 regular-season appearances for the Black & Gold. The Nicoya, Costa Rica, native started and played 90 minutes as the club won the 2020 MLS Cup, while also being part of the side that won the 2021 Campeones Cup against Liga MX's Cruz Azul the following year.
Prior to joining MLS, Díaz spent a season with Club Sport Herediano in Costa Rica's Liga Promerica where he was named the Best Under-21 Player of the 2019 Torneo Clausura, as well as being one of the final nominees for the 2019 Torneo Clausura Best Player award.
Díaz began his professional career with Costa Rica's Municipal Grecia FC in 2016 and helped the club achieve promotion to the First Division after winning the 2016-17 Second Division title.
At the international level, Díaz has eight caps for Costa Rica, which include appearances in the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup, FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and Concacaf Nations League.
Díaz will reunite with former teammate and current Rapids defender Aboubacar Keita with whom he played alongside from 2019 to 2021 before Keita joined Colorado in 2022.
TRANSACTION: Colorado Rapids select midfielder Luis Díaz off waivers on Sept. 7, 2023.
