Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth announced today that recent acquisition, John Grant, Jr., has signed a three-year contract with the team. Veteran forward Dan Carey, who has missed significant time due to injury the past two seasons, also inked a one-year agreement with the club. It was also announced that forward Derek Malawsky has been moved to the holdout list.
One of the most decorated and accomplished lacrosse players in the world, Grant is a 10-year NLL veteran and until his recent move to Denver, has spent his entire career with Rochester. Considered to have the best stick-handling skills in the sport, the left-handed forward has an incredible 976 career (regular season and playoff) points to his credit. The balanced career statistical breakdown of 480 goals accompanied by 496 assists results in an incredible 6.33 points per game average - an average even better than former Mammoth legend Gary Gait's average of 5.86.
"We're excited about having John in the fold for the next three seasons," said Mammoth President and General Manager Steve Govett. "We're looking for him to be one of our leaders both on the field and in the community."
Carey, a standout for Colorado from 2006-2008, missed much of 2009 and 2010 due to head injuries. Having fully recovered, his addition to the 2011 roster will be a welcome inclusion in the locker room and on the field. Carey will be added to the active roster from the Physically Unable to Perform list. He is expected to spend the next few months preparing for game conditions and should be ready early in the 2011 campaign.
"Dan's return will be uplifting to our entire organization," continued Govett. "He's the type of player, and more importantly, person, that teammates, coaches and fans want to be around - he's a first-class human being. And if he can return to his offensive form, our fans will be in for a great show this year."
From 2006-2008, Carey totaled 71 goals and 116 assists in just 43 regular season games for the Mammoth. He was also a key contributor on the 2006 championship team - scoring four goals and assisting on four others in the three playoff games.
Colorado hosts the Toronto Rock in preseason action at Pepsi Center on Saturday, December 4. The Mammoth's 2011 regular-season opener is Saturday, January 8th against the defending NLL champion Washington Stealth.
