Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - Broc Coffman allowed only three singles in seven shutout innings and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks extended their winning streak to 11 straight games, beating the Gary SouthShore RailCats 2-0 Wednesday night at U. S. Steel Yard.
Coffman (7-3) has not allowed a run in 19.0 straight innings - spanning three starts - against the RailCats, allowing only nine hits over that span. The left-hander was dominant again Wednesday, walking and striking out four, putting only two runners in scoring position.
The RailCats managed only two real threats against Coffman, putting runners on first and third with two outs in the first and getting runners to first and second with two outs in the fourth, but the RailCats went down quietly both times. The RailCats finished the game with only four hits, including a Jay Pecci single in the ninth that brought the tying run to the plate against Fargo closer Nate Cotton. But Cotton got Tanner Townsend to hit into a game-ending double play for his league-leading 16th save.
Garret Holleran (0-1) matched Coffman zero-for-zero into the sixth inning, pitching seven strong in only his fourth professional start. Holleran did not allow a run until Carlo Cota singled home Zach Penprase with one out in the sixth. Alan Rick hit his team-leading 12 th home run to lead off the seventh inning off Holleran, but that was all the 23-year-old would allow. Holleran finished with a career-high six strikeouts and walked only one, allowing six hits in his seven innings.
The RedHawks have won nine straight games against the RailCats, including the last six in a row all by two runs or less. The loss dropped the RailCats to two games under the .500 mark for the first time since June 7, and sent the RailCats 1.5 games out of fourth place in the Northern League.
The RailCats (29-31) and RedHawks (37-23) will meet for the final time in the regular season Thursday at 11 a.m. at U. S. Steel Yard. Drew Dickinson (3-4, 5.68 ERA) will start for the RailCats against Fargo right-hander Garry Bakker (4-2, 2.78). That game, as always, will be broadcast live on WEFM, 95.9 FM, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com .
