
JackHammers Beat Flyers 8-2 on Wednesday Afternoon

SCHAUMBURG, IL-David Moraga (8-1) pitched six innings and allowed one run on seven hits to lead the Joliet JackHammers to an 8-2 victory over the Schaumburg Flyers before 8,636 fans at ALEXIAN Field on Wednesday afternoon. The JackHammers have won three straight games and look for the three-game sweep against the Flyers on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
The JackHammers (30-29) scored two runs in the first inning thanks to some clutch two-out hitting by Joey Gomes (1-3). Steve Garrabrants (2-4) singled and moved to second base on a single by Cory Harris (2-4). Gomes stepped up to the plate and lined a double to left field to plate both runners for a 2-0 JackHammers lead.
The Flyers scored a single run in the second inning against Moraga. Lance Koenig (1-4) hit a two-out double and scored on a single by Wilson Matos (2-4) to cut the JackHammers lead in half at 2-1.
A two-run fifth inning gave the JackHammers a 4-1 lead. Nick McIntyre (1-5) reached second due to a one-out double and moved to third on a groundout by Garrabrants. Cory Harris (2-4) hit an RBI single to score McIntyre for a 3-1 Joliet lead.
Harris stole second base and scampered over to third on a throwing error by Flyers catcher Lance Koenig. Gomes worked a walk and Dennis Blackmon, Jr. (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Harris for a 4-1 Joliet lead.
The JackHammers scored four runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-1 lead. Nick Prosise (2-4) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on sacrifice bunt by Andy Lanier (1-4). Joe Hooft (1-4) hit an RBI double to score Prossie and make it 5-1.
McIntyre reached on a two-base error by Flyers 3B Vince Harrison and Hooft ran across home plate for a 6-1 score. Garrabrants then followed with an RBI double to plate McIntyre and give the JackHammers a 7-1 lead.
Garrabrants' double knocked Flyers starter Brad Mumma out of the game. He gave up eight runs on 12 hits in five and one-thirds innings pitched. David Byard came into the game and walked three consecutive batters to force home Garrabrants and make it an 8-2 JackHammers lead.
Moraga allowed seven hits and four walks, while striking out three. With the win, he joins Aaron Trolia as the only Northern League pitchers with eight wins on the season.
Loose Gravel: Joliet LHP Matt Jernstad made his professional debut on Wednesday and pitched one inning. He allowed one run on three hits. Jernstad, a resident of Oswego, and former Northern Illinois Husky, was signed to a contract on July 20.
The JackHammers and Flyers finish their three-game series on Thursday night. RHP Nate Sevier (3-3, 4.16) gets the start for the JackHammers against RHP Alex Rollin (2-2, 6.14) for the Flyers.
