North Bay Battalion News Release

NORTH BAY, Ont. - Brandon Coe of the North Bay Battalion is one of 17 Ontario Hockey League skaters and goaltenders named to play in the Kubota CHL-NHL Top Prospects Game on Jan. 16 at Hamilton, it was announced Monday.

The 25th annual showcase of top Canadian Hockey League players eligible for the National Hockey League Draft is to be hosted by the Hamilton Bulldogs at FirstOntario Centre. The 40 participants were selected by NHL clubs in conjunction with the league's central scouting department.

Right winger Coe has nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points in 29 games this season. The six-foot-four, 190-pound resident of Ajax, Ont., was North Bay's first-round pick, third overall, in the 2017 OHL Priority Selection from the Toronto Nationals minor midgets.

Coe, who turned 18 on Dec. 1, was the youngest player in the OHL in his rookie season of 2017-18, when he scored 10 goals and added 13 assists for 23 points in 63 games. In 157 games over two-plus seasons, he has 36 goals and 49 assists for 85 points with 77 penalty minutes.

"I'm truly honoured and excited to have been chosen to play in the Top Prospects Game," said Coe.

"Coming into this season, one of my personal goals was to make the roster for this game, and being selected provides me with some reassurance of my work on and off the ice."

Among those named to the preliminary roster are Canadian national junior team members Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves, a centre, defenceman Jamie Drysdale of the Erie Otters and goaltender Nico Daws of the Guelph Storm. Left winger Cole Perfetti of the Saginaw Spirit also attended Canada's selection camp.

Thirteen of the 20 OHL clubs are represented, with the Ottawa 67's, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Windsor Spitfires and Sudbury leading the way with two players each. There are 12 forwards and four defencemen from the OHL named to the game, as well as Daws. Others taking part are 13 from the Western Hockey League and 10 from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

NHL central scouting will divide the participants into two teams, which will be announced in January along with the coaching staffs.

In 24 years, a total of 329 Top Prospects skaters and goaltenders have been chosen in the first round of the NHL Draft, representing close to 45 percent of selections. The game has featured 14 first-overall picks, including Nico Hischier in 2017, Connor McDavid in 2015, Aaron Ekblad in 2014, Nathan MacKinnon in 2013, Taylor Hall in 2010, John Tavares in 2009, Steven Stamkos in 2008, Patrick Kane in 2007, Marc-Andre Fleury in 2003, Rick Nash in 2002 and Joe Thornton in 1997.

Players are first-time eligible for the NHL Draft in the year they turn 18, unless they're born Sept. 16 or later, in which case they must wait until the following year. The 2020 NHL Draft is scheduled June 26-27 at Montreal.

The game is to be telecast live across Canada on Sportsnet and TVA Sports and in the United States on NHL Network.
