Spits Double up London 6-3
December 16, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Windsor Spitfires News Release
It was a perfect day for Sunday afternoon hockey, a few snow flurries as the London Knights came to town. This was the third meeting of the season; the Spitfires were looking to gain the season series lead. The Knights came into today's game with the best powerplay in the league and Windsor close behind in third. This was our annual teddy bear toss game of the season with proceeds going to Sparky's Toy Drive.
In the first period, the Spitfires were on fire. It only took them three minutes to get on the board. On a delayed penalty, Angle found Boka in the slot who wired it home and made it rain teddy bears! After a significant delay of taking pictures and clearing the ice, the game resumed. It only took the Spitfires another 2 minutes to score two more goals! First, it was Angle who got the puck in the slot and ripped it top shelf, making it 2-0. It was then followed up by Afanasyev, who capitalized off a turnover and scored top shelf from the slot, making it 3-0 just 5 minutes into the game! The Spitfires kept on the pressure, and Angle scored his 2nd of the game only 5 minutes later. London added a late tally on the powerplay, but the Spitfires led 4-1 after one period of play.
In the second frame, London controlled the play and had lots of shots, but Medina was up to the task. Just over 13 minutes into the period, Afanasyev streaked up the wing and made a beautiful saucer pass over to D'Amico, who buried it to make it 5-1. But late in the frame, London scored two goals and made it 5-3 at the end of 2 periods. London led the shots 25-17 after two.
In the third frame, it was Jean-Luc Foudy who iced the game after coming off the half wall, fake shooting and sniping a beauty over the glove. The Spitfires held the lead and never looked back, taking this game by a score of 6-3.
The Spitfires' next game is Thursday, December 19th, when they take on the Mississauga Steelheads at the WFCU Centre.
