Coach Sparks Come from Behind Win

December 1, 2007 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
North Iowa Outlaws News Release

Sometimes a Coach has to do something to spark his team, and with the Outlaws down 2-0 at the end of the first period, and nothing going right, Coach Dave Boitz did something that lit a fire behind the Outlaws. Coach Boitz had enough with the continous 5 on 3 power plays the Express were getting and let the official know he wasn't happy, which ended in an ejection putting Coach Jeff Crouse at the helm. Something worked because the Outlaws, who fell down 3-0 early in the second responded with three unanswered goals to tie the game, saw Robby Moss make a game saving stop with :05 seconds left in the game, and Alex Carlson make 475 people sound like 2000 fans setting off the wild celebration 3:20 into the overtime period. North Iowa bounced back after a bad game Friday to defeat the Express 4-3.

Southern Minnesota scored first with two power play goals, both with two man advantages, and tacked another one on in the second period. Shortly after the Express took a 3-0 lead, Kyle Politz took a great feed from Alex Carlson behind the Southern Minnesota defense and scored on the breakaway to put the Outlaws on the board. Still trailing in the third period, the Outlaws took control of the game, peppering the Express with 27 third period shots and at the 11:48 mark, Bryant Skarda struck for his fourth goal in two nights to pull the Outlaws within one. With just over three minutes to go the Express got another call which sent Matt Morin to the box and put the Outlaws on the penalty kill. Despite a bad penalty kill night, North Iowa found some special teams magic as Reed Rushing skated across the Express line and snapped home the tying goal with time left on the clock.

Southern Minnesota nearly stole the game back with seconds to go, but Moss batted the puck out of midair to break up the chance. In the overtime, the Express got four shots off, but Moss was equal to the task, and in the end Kyle Politz fanned on a shot, which ended on the stick of Carlson for the game winning goal. The Outlaws evened the series with the Express heading into tomorrow three game series finally at 5:00 pm at the North Iowa Ice Arena.
