April 20, 2009 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
North Iowa Outlaws News Release
Mason City (IA) The North Iowa Outlaws Junior A hockey team is proud to announce that Brandon Brodhag has committed to play collegiate hockey at Division I Merrimack College in Massachusetts beginning in the Fall of 2009. A native of Brooklyn Park, MN, Brodhag set a new franchise record for goals in a season, and led the entire Central Division, with 33 tallies during the regular season. He also added two more during the Outlaws' North American Hockey League first round playoff series versus Owatonna earlier this month.
Brodhag finished with 65 total points, tied for both the team and division lead as well.
"Its been a goal of mine to play Division I hockey and I'm excited that this opportunity with Merrimack has happened" said Brodhag. "It's a great school with a hockey program that is on the rise and when I visited a few weeks ago there was so much that I liked."
Merrimack is a member of Hockey East, the same conference that reigning NCAA Division I champion Boston University plays in. The Warriors are coached by Mark Dennehy who recently finished his fourth season behind the bench for the program as he tries to guide it back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1987-1988 season.
Brodhag is the fourth member of the Outlaws' current roster to commit to a collegiate program joining Dan Durham (Air Force), Anthony Raiola (U-MASS) and John O'Neill (Duluth).
This was Brodhag's first season with the Outlaws, but his second in the NAHL after spending last season with the Southern Minnesota Express. He scored 29 goals last season and was named the Central Division's rookie of year in 2007-2008.
Brodhag, along with the rest of the Outlaws, are currently preparing for the 2009 USA Junior A Hockey National Tournament which will be played in Mason City April 28-May 3. Even though the Outlaws were eliminated from the playoffs after the first round the team earns an automatic berth into the tournament because they are hosting the event.
The North Iowa Outlaws Hockey Club is in its fourth season as members of the North American Hockey League. The NAHL is the nation's largest Junior A hockey league and is now in its 33nd year of operation. For more information, visit northiowaoutlaws.com or call (641) 424-5468.
Outlaws home games are played at the North Iowa Ice Arena in Mason City, IA. All games will be broadcasted on northiowaoutlaws.com and video broadcast through B/2 Network.
