Coach/General Manager Bryan Maxwell Has Been Busy

August 2, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

A few weeks ago Coach/General Manager Bryan Maxwell triumphantly presented his first three signings to the media outside the Save-On-Foods Centre. Several months of hard work had yielded three players that Maxwell had coveted since he took over the job of assembling the fledgling Victoria Salmon Kings hockey club.

Since that day things have obviously reached a critical mass. Just 3 weeks later Mr. Maxwell has more than doubled his roster with the announcement of 5 new signings.

David Brumby, a Victoria, BC native has been inked as one of the team's first goaltenders. "Brumby was my backstop in Lethbridge and since then has proven himself to be a solid professional player," said Mr. Maxwell. Brumby is entering his 9th year of professional hockey and brings a resume that includes stops in a number of other ECHL cities as well as stints with Baltimore and Providence of the AHL and Cleveland of the former IHL.

Joining Brumby between the pipes is another island native, Kyle Stanton of Chemainus, BC. "Stanton is the kind of goalie you see all over pro hockey now: big, quick and focused on playing good positional goal. He'll be a great partner for Brumby," said Maxwell.

One of the great names in pro hockey joins the Salmon Kings with the addition of Blue Bennefield. A 5 year pro Bennefield brings additional leadership and experience to the organization. "Blue will leave them ‘black and blue' at the end of each game," laughed Maxwell. "He's got good size and plays an aggressive brand of hockey. Kind of like I did," said Bryan.

Another interesting signing is Mike Josephson. Another former player of Coach Maxwell from his junior days in Lethbridge, Josephson has been out of hockey for a few years but saw the return of professional hockey to Victoria as his opportunity to take another shot at the game he loves. "Mike contacted me and told me he was training hard and wanted to come back. Well I've seen him skate this summer and he may just be in the best shape of his life right now," said Maxwell. "He's a great kid and I look forward to coaching him again," he added.

Last, but not least, is Stettler, Alberta born Jason Hegberg. A former Lethbridge Hurricane under Coach Maxwell, Hegberg then went on to an excellent university career at the University of New Bruinswick. "Hegberg was our team captain in his last year in Lethbridge and with 4 more years of maturity he'll bring an immense amount of leadership to our dressing room." Maxwell said. "I'm always on the lookout for character players and Jason has character."

Today's announcement brings to 8 the total number of players signed so far by the Salmon Kings. Look for more in the very near future.

The Victoria Salmon Kings play their first regular season game October 22, 2004 against the Bakersfield Condors. They open their home schedule after an extended 14 game road trip on December 5, 2004 against those same Bakersfield Condors.
