New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ â After falling behind early, the Bangor bats came alive late, to win a close one versus New Jersey, 5-4.
The Jackals have had trouble scoring runs, but showed no signs of that early. In the first, John Anderson led the game off with a walk, and scored from second on a single by designated hitter Scott Goodman. The RBI was Goodman's sixth of the year. Kevin Grijak and Wady Almonte then walked. This set the stage for Wilton Veras, and he doubled, scoring Goodman, to put the Jackals on top by two.
New Jersey added one more in the top of the third, when Almonte homered for the second time in two days, to make it 3-0 in favor of the boys in red and black.
The Bangor comeback would start in the fifth inning. Brad Hargreaves singled with one out, and Shin Uchino then walked with two outs. The next batter Jose Garcia drove the full count pitch by Jackals starter Brad Whitworth into left field, to put the Lumberjacks back into the mix, 3-2.
The Lumberjacks would tie the ballgame up in the following inning. Donnie Ross led off with a single, which drove Whitworth out of the game for the Jackals. Mark Burke singled and Willie King walked to load the bases. With two down, second baseman Mike Grasso came up with a clutch infield single, to plate Ross, and even the game up.
In the bottom of the eighth, Bangor would score their fourth unanswered run, to take the lead on a Mark Burke home run to right-center field. It was Burke' s fourth homerun of the 2004 season.
But New Jersey would battle back in the top of the ninth. With one out, Craig Conway doubled into the right field gap off of Lumberjack closer John Rohlfing. After a strikeout of Goodman, Rohlfing walked Grijak and Almonte. With the bases loaded, on a 3-1 pitch, Rohlfing walked Veras to tie the game up at 4.
Jackals' reliever Carlos Figueroa remained in the game in the bottom half of the ninth. He walked Garcia and Jake Whitesides consecutively. With two on, Ross put down a sacrifice bunt, advancing both runners. Strategically, New Jersey intentionally walked the following batter Burke to load the bases. New Jersey then called on the services of Mike Perkins. With the count 3-1, Derry Hammond roped a single into left field to win the contest for the Lumberjacks.
The Jackals return home on Monday June 7, 2004 when their rival Brockton Rox come to town. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, contact the Jackals Ticket Office at (973) 746-7434. For other information, visit www.Jackals.com
