Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Alex Kuqali scored the game-winning goal 2:27 into overtime Friday, but the Waterloo Black Hawks earned a standings point against the Sioux City Musketeers in a thrilling game at Tyson Events Center.

Kuqali's game-winner came during a power play from the right wing circle on a feed from the opposite side of the crease by David Goodwin. Waterloo had tied the game during a Sioux City power play midway through the third. Tyler Zepeda swiped a puck to create a breakaway from his own blue line. His shot was ruled to have gone in, just under the crossbar, before springing right back out, in spite of vehement disagreement from the Sioux City bench and crowd.

The Musketeers notched the lone goal of the opening period at 11:59 during their first power play as Brad Robbins' slap shot from the right wing circle beat Stephon Williams inside the opposite post.

A pair of controversial goals in the second period allowed Waterloo to stay within one going to the final frame. Scott MacDonald was credited with a goal at 4:26 after more than a minute of play passed when the marker was not initially counted. His backhanded wraparound was ruled to be a goal after a long conversation between the officials. Sioux City jumped back ahead at 9:57 on a tally by David Henry and made it 3-1 at 18:05 when Jordan Boucher-Gould fired in a chance from the left wing circle. However, the Hawks drew back within one with 24.3 seconds before intermission. With the Hawks already on a power play, the Musketeers handled a puck illegally in the crease, setting up a penalty shot for Taylor Cammarata. The rookie swung through the right circle before cutting across the slot and firing a shot past the stick of Matt Skoff.

The Hawks meet another Western Conference opponent on the road Saturday; Waterloo visits the Omaha Lancers at 7:05. The next game at Young Arena is Friday, February 17th versus the Fargo Force. Tickets for the first meeting of the season between the Hawks and Force are on sale now from waterlooblackhawks.com.
