Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Lincoln, NE - Once again the Stampede fought hard, but were unable to find the back of the net and fell 5-0 to the Lincoln Stars Saturday night in Lincoln. Jay Williams stopped 28 of 33 shots in goal for the Herd who are now winless in their last seven games (0-5-2). The Stampede are now 12-23-3 and fell seven points out of the final playoff spot in the West.
The Stars caught a break just 3:33 in when a shot from Paul LaDue from the right point deflected off a Stampede leg and between the pads of Jay Williams to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. The Stars took a 2-0 lead just over five minutes later when LaDue scored again, shorthanded. The Herd were applying pressure on the powerplay, but Mitch Hughes twisted his ankle after wristing a shot on net and the Stars took the puck the other way where LaDue skated in between the circles and fired a shot into the upper left hand corner of the net. The Stampede had a couple opportunities to get back into the game, but Jackson Teichroeb stopped all 10 Stampede shots and the Stars took the 2-0 lead into the locker room.
The Stampede came out with some energy and scoring chances in the second, but found themselves down two men with just over four minutes remaining in the period and the Stars cashed in when Kevin Roy found the back of the net at 16:18. Brent Tate fired a shot onto the net of Jay Williams who made a pad save that bounced out to an open Roy who netted his league leading 33rd goal and 61st point of the season. Sioux Falls nearly got on the board a couple times in the period, but Eric Brenk's wrist shot hit the crossbar and then in the final seconds of the period the Herd had a giant scramble in front of the Lincoln net, but couldn't get it to go and trailed 3-0 heading into the third period. The Stampede outshot the Stars 10-6 in the period.
Things got physical in the third where four fights broke out. Ed McGovern, Mark Solyankin, Kyle Rankin and Joseph Lordo all dropped the gloves against the Stars who showed they wouldn't be pushed around. Lincoln tallied two goals in the period though to pull away from the Stampede, Kevin Roy scored at 4:36 and Markus McCrea put it away for good at 17:32. Despite allowing five goals, Jay Williams played well and kept the game within reach, but the Herd were unable to muster hardly any offensive opportunities in the period and were outshot 19 to 7.
The Herd finished the night 0 for 4 on the powerplay while Lincoln was 1 for 5. The Stars outshot the Herd 33-27 on the night and improved to 6-1-0 against the Stampede this season. The Herd will look to break out of their slump on Wednesday when they host the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:05 PM at the Sioux Falls Arena. The 5th annual Sioux Nation Pet Clinic Wiener Dog Race will take place on Saturday, February 18th when the Stampede host Sioux City at 7:05 PM. Tickets for both games are still available.
